Default Bricked 2.0.1 iPhone 2G stuck with Steve and 1604

My iPhone seems to be permanently stuck on Steve surprise screen, I tried restoring it with both regular and custom firmware but in each instance I get Could not restore iphone error 1604. Downgraded iTunes to 7.62 in hope of restoring it back down to 1.1.4 but iTunes does not even recognize the phone. I am at loss what to do next.

    Any wisdom would be appreciated.

Back ground. Phone was originally 1.1.4 up to the newest software update with pwnage. It all looked good but the phone would miss on average 18 out of say 20 to 25 calls per day. Unless the screen was on, the phone call would not "wake up" the phone to make it ring, which got really annoying since well I do use this phone for work.... Strange but true. Please help if you can. Thanks T

Just change USB ports and computers and keep trying.

It is frustrating but it has nothing to do with pwnage - it is just a problem that iTunes has.

Sometimes it does not like the USB ports. So swap them over and if that fails try a different computer.

You can also search apples forum for fixes for 1604.

Like I said the problem is not down to pwnage so have a look there as well!

Have you tried DFU mode ? Its sound like you are in normal Restore mode. Use a stopwatch and press both power and home buttom in exactly 10 seconds, then release sleep/wake and keep holding home buttom for excatly 10 seconds more and release it, itunes sould see you phone and aks for a restore. If you still see steve you have to try to get in DFU mode again, the screen have to be blank.

    Hope it helps

Well what I was doing is - having million issue with the Iphone. I went into bootneuter and put in on 4.6 and set everything else to off. The iphone reset and woke up but came up with comm error, no phone or wifi - understandable. Bootneuter would not turn on as the phone had an error and instructed me to get to apple/support website.

iTunes 7.7 said it needed to rester the iphone which I said ok to using default apple image - I though I could bring the phone to its original state and then crack it anew. Well that failed. I ended up with pineapple, steve and error 1604. I tried downgrading the phone on both mac and PC. Installing iTunes 7.5 and 7.62 - nothing. At one point in time it seemed that the iphone was going to be restored but it did not. However, what I do have now is at least apple logo and apple restore logo which is a stop ahead as I will at least be able to maybe send this off to apple for service. Now when I try to do a restore or a custom image restore or downgrade I get itunes detected iphone in restore mode, so I click OK and allow it to upgrade and restore, about a minute into it I get iphone could not be restored, an unknown error occured 2001. And that is where I am at now.

The phone sits in restore mode when it starts up, I can put it in DFU but that's about it.

Steve is telling you that the iPhone is still pwnaged. When on custom firmware it would show the USB cable and iTunes loge when in restore/recovery mode.

If I were you i would use PwnageTool 2.0.2 and create a custom 2.0.1 firmware. When done skip the last step (getting into DFU mode). Just quit PwnageTool 2.0.2 when at this step. Start iTunes 7.7 then, connect the iPhone with Steve on it, iTunes will see the iPhone in recovery mode. Option-restore to the custom firmware then and you will be set.
Once the iPhone is pwnaged you dont need DFU, simple restore (steve) will do.

The problem is that iTunes does not want to restore the iPhone it comes up with a host of different errors from 1604 to 2001 to 2012 you name it I get it. I finally got to, after about 12 tries put 1.1.4 on the phone now I am running iLiberty+ to Jailbreak it and activate it but the software has now been running for about 2 hours and it is not even half way through. It is showing executing jailbreak and that is all she wrote. We will see, this poor phone is very very sick. If this will not finish in an hour I think I will stop the application and do one more restore and use ziphone to get around the activation issue. Who knows, I have now been fighting with it for the second day still no calls.

I don't think your phone is sick, try with a different computer PC or MAC, remove any USB hub or add one just change something in you hardware. Is definitely something wrong in Itunes, I've experience this problem to the point I cannot update twice in one computer; I have to jump from one computer to another to avoid the pesky errors.
You'll get it to work eventually just stick with Itunes don't do anything crazy you'll regret later.

Well it has now been just a tad over three hours and the jailbreak is not going to move it has not at all. I assume it is not going. I have no hubs or anything. Just the iphone plugged in to my MacBook Pro - simple and straight forward. I think I will kill the program and try to do another restore.

Well, you are at 1.1.4 firmware now, right. iLiberty on the Mac every now and then shows this behavior.
Give this one a try. In iTunes restore to Apple firmware 2.0.1, just standard. Then give PwnageTool 2.0.2 another try. Should work then.
