What could cause this issue? and is it something that pwnage itself could cause at any point in the process? If it works once, pwning the phone then flashing using bootneuter is it always going to work?

I am just wondering how safe the whole process is?

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that so far these have been pre-existing problems, where cellphone wasn't working even before running pwnagetool or bootneuter.

pwnagetool itself doesn't touch the baseband. And BootNeuter didn't get a chance to touch it in xonder's case because it got stuck at "determining settings" step.

butterbean your situation is a little different, yours looks like an invalid baseband that even the bootloader has determined isn't safe to run. You can get past the 1011 restore screen by using iNdependence or ibooter or iphuc etc. And then run geohot's ienew eraser program to erase the baseband completely and use bbupdater to flash valid fls files.

The thing is... this phone was bought already unlocked and worked a few days, and one day all of a sudden it got messed up.

There's no sure way to know ahead of time Because you can't tell in your current state how much of the baseband is missing.

I believe what he is saying is that your phone restored ok - but it needs a kick from Independence to boot it up.

So plug it into your mac with Independence running and see what happens! If it works it takes at most a minute or so and the phone will kick into the home screen/activation screen.
