    Question [Bootloader] MD5 inconsistancies!?

This is meant primarily for a DevTeam response because I don't anyone else knows!

Someone brought up in the other topic that the bootloaders from the complete pirate bay download and from the iclarified links are different.

I checked this with MD5 hashes and it is confirmed!

Yet both versions seem to work - plenty of people have used the linked bootloaders and pirate bay versions...

I don't know where the pirate bay complete app came from - maybe from the devteam? who knows but there is some concern that the bootloaders on one of them may have been fiddled with.

What is going on? is that possible? would BootNeuter load up anything or only real bootloader files?

you could do a cmp -l and check what and where the differences are. it'd be easy to spot if the ones in piratebay are the FBs or something different.

I was under the impression that BootNeuter took care of the flashing as far as neutering and fakeblanks goes and that it would remove what needed to be removed to make the fakeblanks so that only the "whole" bootloaders would be needed and used!? would that work in reverse as well? If they were FB bootloaders would BN be able to "fill" them in?

The question really has to be - does BootNeuter ONLY allow real bootloaders?

I used the pirate bay version without any problems but it clearly is not the same file renamed but rather made at another time although it must be real to work!? Really we need some DevTeam input here!

These are the MD5s I got... compare against your values:

    Code:
    BL-39-FBK.bin - 5fb6673f30b038076c71d22560693f36
    BL-39-ORG.bin - 3904955caf6a8720cf7fd9e29ffc1938
    BL-46-FBK.bin - f42fadd86fa301ab150df9fe847c6515

Those are the MD5s of a pack i've downloaded some time ago (don't remember where from)

The MD5s from MMI and iClarified are:
    3.9 original: a34410fe8b56cc57b2a3183d6ecc6b5e
    4.6 original: 1c15fabcbbfa4fc240ad66bae4da617e

And the MD5s from the already packed Pwnage tool, from the torrents are:
    3.9 original: 0d6467d91237368dd520fddbeddc1dca (different from drg's)
    4.6 original: a2423f66362d7dbce5a98056f3aa80cf (equal as drg's)

    So which ones are correct?

(P.S. It would be nice if the PwnageTool made a sanity check for the correct MD5 on BL load...)

Only the first 0x15914 bytes of BL39 are checked and used, and only the first 0x19c24 bytes of BL46 are checked and used.

If you prune those files to those lengths, you should see the MD5s line up.

    lol
Apart from you guys disagreance this could be a serious matter. I don't know what could be the adverse effects of using pwnage with a "wrong" Bootloader, but it can't be good.

Some DevTeam to step up plz.....MuscleNerd, Zf .....guys?

I'm saying you can confirm it your own for peace of mind Using those lengths though.

Both PwangeTool and BootNeuter.app verify the hashes of the images for those lengths. BootNeuter.app will error out with "Not all the files could be found" if you try to use altered images within those lengths.

But in theory your copy of BootNeuter.app could be bogus and altered to accept bogus bootloaders, so you need to either trust your source for BootNeuter.app or hand-verify the hash of the BootNeuter.app/BootNeuter executable itself (00e871f316faa8518bea3e382c4cc0c4)

Then again you also have to trust that I am who I say I am and my hackint0sh password hasn't been compromised.
