Best upgrade option for 3GS on 4.0.2 with 05.13.04 BB
Hey All,
With the release of iOS 4.3, I think its time to upgrade my iOS, but I am a bit out of the loop and want to make the right decision. So, I thought I would reach out to the community.
As I mentioned, I have a 3GS running 4.0.2 with baseband 05.13.04 and is already jailbroken. I have SHSH's saved on Cydia - 3.1.3, 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1, and 4.2.1+.,
My question is this - what is the best update option/method. I know baseband preservation is a big deal and I don't want to act impulsively and end up with a less than desirable baseband. Though, I would like the most recent update possible - ideally 4.3.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Pwnagetool 4.2 - this will get you to iOS 4.2.1 and keep your current baseband.
Don't let your baseband get updated. This means you absolutely must use custom IPSW to restore (upgrade) any iOS version higher than 4.0.2
iOS 4.3 is not recommended. It limited to a tethered jailbreak only at the moment, also MobileSubstrate requires an update to work on 4.3, ultrasn0w requires MobileSubstrate so 4.3 is a bad choice if you rely on unlock. A lot of tweaks will need to be updated to work with iOS 4.3, so it's only for recommended that Cydia developers update to 4.3 for now.

Thank you for your advice. I will stick with 4.2.1
I have another, related question - Will I lose things like notes and SMS's from this upgrade?

No, all you have to do is backup with iTunes and then after the restore you just "restore from backup" in iTunes.

It appears Pwnagetool 4.2 is for Macs and, as I forgot to mention, have a PC. Sn0wbreeze 2.2 is the best option? Also, I downloaded the custom 4.2.1 IPSW. I am running iTunes 10.2.1.1. Am I to assume if I shift restore to the custom IPSW that my baseband will not be automatically updated?
Again, sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to make a mistake...

Yes you can use sn0wbreeze or download the custom ipsw from a "trusted source", after all, you don't want your baseband to be updated.
If you use a custom IPSW that does not update the baseband you can just shift restore.

I'm getting error 3014 which is because itunes can't reach Apples server. Any idea how to fix this?
Thanks again for everything.

Btw, do you have SHSH blobs for 4.2.1?
