    Default 3GS at 3.0.1 (7A400) and 4.26.08

Apologies if this is answered elsewhere but I haven't seen a clear cut answer to it on searches.

I have a 32Gb 3GS at 3.0.1 (7A400) running firmware 4.26.08. It is with O2 in the UK and I have an official unlock.

I haven't upgraded to 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 as I hear these remove the tethering "hack". However, a friend has now told me that I can replace the tethering hack through jailbreaking.

So... what's the best route? I'd like to put 3.1.3 on there if I can keep the jailbreak, if not I'll settle for 3.1.2. The phone has never previously been jailbroken meaning I don't have my keys on Cydia. I do however have my IBEC and IBSS files from the old itunes temp folder exploit that I took when I first purchased my phone a year ago.

My iphone is backed up to my PC. I have access to a Macbook to run pwnagetool if needs be.

    Summary:
    Firmware: 3.0.1 (7A400)
    Modem: 4.26.08
    Carrier: O2
    Ever been jailbroken: No
    Unlocked: Official carrier supported unlock
    Cydia backed up hashes: No
    IBSS/IBEC files copied: Yes
Objective: 3.1.2 or higher with tethering capability (for free!)

    Thanks in advance

Since you are officially unlocked, you don't have too much to worry about. 3.1.3 cannot be jailbroken at present, so you do not want to upgrade to 3.1.3.

Did you get an SHSH on file of 3.1.2? If so, 3.1.2 can be upgraded to and tethering can be added by installing a package from Cydia after jailbreak.

Best way to go about it is to flash 3.1.2 using the SHSH / Saurik's Server / TinyTSS and then use redsn0w to jailbreak the device. PwnageTool would work, but is somewhat unnecessary as you don't need to unlock the device and you don't need to hacktivate. Flashing 3.1.2 and then using redsn0w should leave you with the previous (and still unlockable via SW if ever needed) baseband, the 3.1.2 software, and a functional and clean jailbreak.

What bootloader revision do you have? Do you know? It doesn't make much difference but it will answer whether it's a tethered jailbreak or untethered jailbreak for you (which is nice to know beforehand so you can weigh the pros and cons).

Not sure on the bootloader. I don't know of a way of finding this out without jailbreaking. Basically the firmware on my phone is untouched since I bought it. Same baseband and standard firmware as described above.

I don't have SHSH's on Saurik's server - as never been jailbroken. I do have the IBEC and IBSS files (from grabbing them from the itunes temp folder during a restore).

If you've got no SHSH on file with Saurik, the only way you'll be able to jailbreak is by using either redsn0w or blackra1n. The IBEC and IBSS are pretty much useless as they do not contain all of the information required to create the SHSH. Someone *could* potentially release a tool to do this, but frankly, if it hasn't happened by now -- I'm pretty certain it won't happen.

It is recommended that you use redsn0w -- it's a more reliable and robust jailbreak than blackra1n and takes care of several important issues in relation to hacktivation (if you need it) and the AFC2 service providing root filesystem access for iFunbox or DiskAid.

There's a walkthrough for jailbreaking a 3GS on 3.1.2 with redsn0w available on iClarified here: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS on OS 3.1.2, 3.1.3 Using RedSn0w (Windows)

    Hi,

I have pretty much the same iphone hardware as you (3GS on 3.0.1, 4.26.08 baseband). Mine was jailbroken on 3.0.1.
Last night, I jailbroke it on 3.1.3. Took about 10 minutes, no issues. iTunes restored all my apps without issue and all work.
For untethered vs tethered, you should double check your bootrom version (lots of links in these forums to do so), you want the version to end in .3 and not .2 (which is a later bootrom, despite being a lower number). If its a .3 you are good to go.

I have a week 24 3GS, so that would be the unfixed bootrom?

Update - just stumbled upon The Firmware Umbrella

Seems I can reconstruct my own SHSH from my local files and point hosts to localhost for the apple servers...

Bit nervous, so going to read up some more, but may try this route.

Ok, brain is slowly turning to mush!

I now have in my posession my 3.0 SHSH files which I can serve on my own machine. I presume this will let me reflash back to 3.0 in the future.

I also have used Umbrella to get my 3.1.3 SHSH files - I presume this will let me reflash back to 3.1.3 (once a new version comes out etc).

Can I also get my 3.1.2 SHSH files? If I flash to 3.1.2 is there a way of getting an SHSH for it?

I dont think you can since Apple stopped signing those now (unless you are already jailbroken and have SHSHs stored with Saurik's server).

See here for info: The Firmware Umbrella: iPhone OS 3.1.2 Locked

Ok, so with my own 3.0 SHSH blobs and tinytss - can I use that to generate signatures and flash to any firmware from 3.0 upwards?
