- try recovery mode instead dfu (power off, hold home and connect to
computer)
- try a different usb port
- try a different computer
- install itunes new
- or try to downgrade to 2.x firmware using itunes 8.2 with an original firmware then quickqwn / pwnagetool and then upgrade to 3.1 with pwnagetool

You can downgrade to 3.0 by shift clicking on the restore button (or option/alt if you are a on a Mac) and browsing to a 3.0 ipsw for your iPhone model.

Hey jeh i got it working. try this,
launch itunes. switch off your iphone, now keeping the home button pressed (the centre button on the phone) plug the usb cable (dont release the home button unless you see a symbol on the phone showing usb cable and itunes logo) This will bring your phone in recovery mode and you will see the restore option.
Mail me if you still cant get it.
I hope you know how to downgrade after you see restore button.
