2g iphone at 2.1 firmware. What is best for 3.0 upgrade/unlock?
Hey guys just want to say its nice to finally join this community. You guys have been a great help to previously unlocking my iphone.
So here is the problem:
I am running 2.1 firmware on my 2g iphone. I want to update to 3.0. Should I update through iTunes meaning will my phone stay unlocked? Or should I get pwnage 3.0 and update/unlock to the 3.0 software.
- Has the baseband been updated? If so should I first upgrade my iphone the conventional way on itunes and then unlock/jailbrake again?
If any of you can offer any help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Use the latest version of Pwnage. It's quick, easy and painless. You are over thinking the process.

i have the same setup, but i always have issues with PWNAGETOOL and the part where i have to put the phone in DFU mode (turn off - hold for 10 secs...). It never works and my phone freezes.
So what i did was to use pwnage tool to create the CUSTOM RESTORE IPSW, and then within itunes 8.2 for osx, clicked ALT + Restore iphone button, to select the custom file. Itunes then restored the iphone to 3.0 and everything works fine (except for all the installous apps, and cydia repos i had installed)

If the iPhone has been pwned already, you don't have to put it in DFU mode, but just in Recovery mode, as you did. This is the right process.
BTW in my opinion PwnageTool is the best solution, bcs safe and quick.

Same set-up
Same situation here. If I upgrade from 2.1 to 3.0 with PwnageTool, do I lose all my existing apps, config, etc.? I'm super happy with my phone at 2.1, and don't really want to lose all the custom set-up/application data, etc.
Thanks.

Of course you will lose all your not official apps (the one dowloaded from Cydia-Icy) and mods; you will not lose any of your personal data, config, official apps ecc.

Is there some way to keep all the "not official" apps/mods/settings/etc? I've dug around on the forums a bit and it seems to sound possible through some manipulating the iTunes backups, etc. but I haven't gotten a good picture of the process.
