iPhone PwnageTool Custom Firmware
You can try this one from iPhone-Hacks.com's iPhone Downloads area.
I am not happy with the Cydia in 2.0, its not stable and crashed on me many times. It may be architecturally better and more robust than Installer but it needs more time to mature. One would have thought it would take more time to unlock 2.0 than port apps to 2.0 and now we have this weird situation with no apps on 2.0 and confusion with Installer.
But I did not see any of the lag or slowness others are complaining about with Cydia, phone was as fast as 114, safari still crashed. The only thing I noticed is the brightness button in settings was not as responsive to touch as before. However there are many complaints of 2.0 laginess pwned or not pawned so there must be some issues.
I downgraded back to 114 and should not have upgraded, its a waste of time untill Installer/Cydia and app developers figure out the confusion and there are more apps. Of course if you absolutely want push and some of the apps in appstore then it may be worth it. For me fring, videorecorder, nemusync, mxtube are essentials for the time being and 114 is fast ,stable and responsive. I will wait t out for the fog to clear.
I dont understand how you could get anything on there without cydia..so what would be the point in having custom firmware? or is there some other way to get stuff on there?
Theoretically, Cydia should not cause any problems because it's mostly just a matter of putting some new files into some folders. The other pieces of software on the iPhone, including the OS, never even looks at it beyond putting an icon for it onto the SpringBoard. What libraries it does replace are more UNIX-y than Cocoa, which most of the other apps rely upon.
So therefore, it should have ZERO performance impact. It should have about as much performance impact as you putting thirty songs onto your iPhone, i.e. nothing.

If these hangs and slow-downs are real, they sound like permissions have been set incorrectly on many directories and files. This may be a PwnageTool fuck-up (during Cydia installation) or a Cydia fuck-up (during the use of Cydia).
Could someone do us a big favor and:
1. Reproduce the problem.
2. Install SSH
3. Execute "find / -ls" through SSH and put the output onto pastebin and send it to us.
This will list all the files on your iPhone and the permissions settings for all of them. This will let us find out if anything is wrong.
This is going to be a multi-part reply. I don't have ADD. Really.

I don't think you can install SSH w/o Cydia, because the SSH part is in the "Cydia Installer" section. Beyond that, the SSH installer is a .deb file, with preinstall, uninstall instructions in it. I think installing that - even through PwnageTool - would require Cydia. Otherwise it's a set of unix instructions the iphone doesn't know how to interpret without the Cydia package. However, I think it's possible to make custom packages, leading me to....
2. [Tzones w/o Cydia - maybe.]
I've made a custom Tzones package. I've created a custom firmware with it, and without Cydia or SSH. I won't be able to test it until tonight. Following the dev team's "test before release" motto (large Redmond based companies should take note...), I'll release it tonight in a new topic if it works.
3. [Cydia the culprit? Yes and No]
I uninstalled Cydia on my phone, as well as uninstalled Exchange, secure Wifi. The battery life does seem better. However, I'm still not convinced that Cydia OTB is the cause of this. I have two iPhones, both had Cydia on 2.0, yet only 1 had the problems:
iPhone A: With battery problems
-Pwn'd at 2.0 (using DFU restore)
-Same custom firmware as iPhone B
-Cydia installed, and updated whenever asked for update
-SSH installed, uninstalled
-Cisco VPN, Exchange (requiring VPN), Certificate based enterprise WPA2 Wifi, Gmail
-Lots of appstore apps installed, removed
iPhone B: No battery problems
-Pwn'd at 1.1.4, DFU restore to 2.0
-Same custom firmware as iPhone A
-Cydia installed, no updates applied
-SSH never installed, only Tzones
-Only Gmail and home WPA wifi
-Only 1 appstore app installed (BoxOffice)
Anyone can look at this and realize that iPhoneA has tremendous potential for problems, but the point I'm making is that Cydia is on both yet iPhoneB is fine. Identical firmware applied to both, but B was pwn'd at 1.1.4, and has no Cydia updates.
And no - the battery problems aren't simply because of greater use
funny.. i've read your same evangalism on 3 different threads about how cydia is the issue and how your prefs opened in 10 seconds with it and then magically opened in 2 without it...

let me do it again...
you can't get your settings open, you blame cydia.
i open mine, it works fine.
other people read your first thread, and think cydia is satan reincarnated in a software package and start spreading misinformation about how it sucks.
i come in and read your post and have to play fire control so newbs who don't know any better don't believe everything they read... :\
hopefully your issues get resolved.. i'd say a big part is the iphone OS 2.0... cydia has nothing to do with it.
I PERSONALLY dislike cydia, despite what the people above me have to say. Some people like it, while others like myself personally enjoy customizing the themes and using installer to download and be able to do so. What is the big deal with 2.0 anyway?? On a 1st gen iphone, it really makes no sense... I upgraded and after like 2 days of having it, I just wanted to be able to customize my phone, instead of just having the plain old background.
Everyone was expecting third party apps...TO WORK! They aren't just whining because they feel like it. I'm pretty sure I read that third party apps were supported, but not installer?! That doesn't make much sense, since INSTALLER IS A THIRD PARTY APP! But with time, comes progress, and don't flame because I'm not trying to pour negativity upon the dev team and what they are doing. Installer must be hard to port, hence the lack of it on 2.0...
But for me, 2.0 was not worth it. Slower as compared to my bros/gf's iphone on 1.1.4. And the lack of customizing and doing what I want, was a very big turnoff.
lol to the person above me...please don't take up the whole forum because you have special needs.
