Default [2.0][advice] No need for WinPwn2.0, just use XPwn

I'm not quite sure what the big deal about WinPwn 2.0 not being released is... I just used XPwn (Windows Vista) and it worked fine. Anyone on Windows that wants their iPhone/iPod jailbroken, just download XPwn, follow the instructions, and you're good.

    See dev-team's page at http://wikee.iphwn.org/news:xpwn_release.

They create nightly build of it, and the latest version has support for firmware 2.0. Download the libusb-win32-filter as well (it's linked to on the page. And if you're on Vista, follow the compatibility instructions).

View the readme file in the download. First create a custom ipsw as it says (remember to include the Cydia.tar file; I forgot to do that at first) and set any options for your iPhone in terms of unlocking (I have an iPod Touch so I didn't set any of those). Then run the itunespwn thing so that iTunes will accept your custom file. Then close any running processes of iTunes through task manager. Set your device in DFU mode, then run the dfu-util. Then run iTunes and restore with your custom firmware.

I don't know if it'll work for you, or if the version of xPwn is even stable, but it worked for me.

    Just a note:

You can sidestep the whole libusb crap by using itunespwn (instead of dfu-util). This is the same method currently used by PwnageTool on the Mac. dfu-util is created because I really hate being dependent on Apple software.

Once again itunespwn and dfu-util are two approaches to the same problem. They do not both need to be done. itunespwn is a lot easier on Windows. Of course, if you're on Linux, you will have to to use dfu-util.

BTW, if anyone has any problem with it, the proper way to submit a bug report is to give me a full log along with the command-line used.

It's acommand line toola nd requires certain ammount thinking and reading the README. :hack: But i am sure the guys who did the GUIs fror the old xpwn versions will luckily provide a window sone click version. Maybe just ask someone who did such a gui tool.

Default crashes at start to create restore option

I am truing to use ipsw.exe to build a custom 2.0 IPod firmware.

    Here is my command line.

    Code:
    ipsw.exe iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw iPod1,1_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw .\bundles\Cydia.tar
It crashes just after it logs "Start to create restore option".

I am using Windows Vista SP1. Any idea how to debug this?

@planetbeing: Is there a way to restore firmware (or use custom one) under Linux, or still you need iTunes and Windows/Mac for that?
