[2.0][Advice] New Member > need answers to a few questions
okay...i upgraded to the 2.0 firmware, having never unlocked/jailbroken a phone before, and like many i anxiously await the release of the new tool, however i'm somewhat nervous and would just like to clear up a few things before i do anything.
1) if i unlock, activate, and jailbreak my phone with the tool, what will happen when itunes first recognizes my phone? i.e., will it put back all my music, contacts, texts, etc from the latest backup and recognize it as the same phone? will i be able to continue using att as i have been, including youtube, safari, mail, etc?
-how does itunes handle an already activated phone? will i even be able to set it up as the same phone with all my settings and such?
2) this whole boot neuter thing kinda scares me... i can't really get a grip on it. if i set my phone to never auto lock before i start ANY of this process, boot neuter will run fine no?
and then, say in future i want to undo all of this. i download boot neuter from the installer, set everything to off, and then press flash? and let it do it's thing? then restore from itunes using stock firmware? do i have that right?
3) slightly unrelated- are any of the apps in installer going to even run in the new firmware?
4) for future firmware updates, i read that one should never restore from a backup. this means one loses all settings and everything after restoring, upgrading, and then re-jailbreaking?
i think i've covered everything...any help appreciated, thanks a bunch!

You're gonna have this thread locked in a min because you haven't followed the rules regarding thread titles. The answers to youre questions are:
1) Yes
2) Yes
3) Yes
4) it is not so much never restore from a backup as thats what they're there for, but its best not to.
I hope this answers your questions i didnt need to go into much detail as you have already got it correct.

Search other threads, there is plenty of info on all of this. And so you know: Backup and Restore are totally different things. A backup can be restored, but an iTunes Restore flashes the phone with fresh firmware (or a pwned firmware image), after that you can upload the backup of your phone without any hassle or danger.

thanks for the replies, i'll change the thread name.
i actually did do a fair bit of research on this and other sites, i read the whole pwnage tool tutorial, it was just these specific items on which i was a little hazy.
last question- if i choose to upgrade the firmware again at a later date, WITHOUT jailbreaking or unlocking, would it be possible to get everything back onto the phone as it is now? (this regarding the advice i read on never restoring settings from a jailbroken backup), and then if you choose to not restore from a backup, how do you get itunes to re-recognize it as an att iphone with a contract and everything already set up?
thanks again

hey ankoa,
I had this phenomena going on several times and my impression is, that some plist files (config files basically, I guess summerboard is the problem) get stored in the backup and restored to new iphone. When the init-process starts and there are entries in a plist file that reference a package which is not installed yet, guess what happens?
Spring Board runs the cycle and restarts itself continuously. I never followed that up, since I only use a few setting different and Music, etc can be restored easily with a few clicks.
Hope that helps,
J*
