Smile [1.1.2 Gunlock (1.1.2 OTB) ][Question] Uninstalling apps before update/Pwnage?

I tried looking but haven't seen anything in relation to the PwnageTool yet.

I'm currently using a 1.1.2 Gunlocked, 1.1.2 OTB phone. Now, as I understand. I just need to update (not restore) through itunes to 1.1.4 before I pwn it.

Question is. What should be done about all my apps that are installed? I've been following this forum for a while and remember there being issues with apps left installed when restoring and unlocking on a new firmware. Where installer didn't know that the app was still installed in the system and wouldn't let you remove it or re-install..

Should I uninstall all the additional apps/games I've added since gunlock? or will the pwnage/restore in itunes wipe out everything thats on there?

The prospect of simply updating to new firmwares with pwnage rather than always restoring is a nice idea. Can't wait.

    Thanks.

Maybe also since this is likely going to be the de facto standard tool from now on. should there be a simple FAQ put together to cover such questions as this? just an idea.

Yes, you need to update to either 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 to "Pwn" it before you can do anything else

Yes, a restore wipes everything out including Media (music, photos...) and preferences, so you don't need to uninstall all the stuff manually.
An upgrade on the other hand would wipe the actually applications but keep the preferences so Installer.app would believe such things are still installed while they are not.

This is not the case however.

I believe many guides will be written in the near future, just give it a few days
Besides the tool is pretty straightforward to use, specially if you watched the video which actually shows all the steps required (except for obtaining bootloader files).

    Many thanks.

Had a couple other questions which I'll post here rather than creating a new thread.

--> Having to do with pwnage tools IPSW builder. Would I be able to BootNeuter and build the pwned IPSW on a mac and then restore with it through windows?

I have both OSX and Windows but everything is sync'd on my windows box. but, the win tool isn't out yet.

    --> second part to that.
Does anyone know why it is that a settings restore screws things up on the phone? if I update from 1.1.2 to 1.1.4 (which would then be locked). restore to pwned 1.1.4 and restore settings. Will stuff start going haywire?

not sure what the negative effect of this is. just people kinda say, don't do it. but for some it seems to work fine. I just don't want to lose my notes, email, sms, etc etc etc.
music/videos/native apps I know are toast. thats not a prob.

if restoring settings is a confirmed no-no on pwnage. can I manually copy the notes, mail, sms .app folders and then replace them once I'm on pwned 1.1.4?

I'm getting anxious. I've been waiting to go to a newer firmware for a while.

    Thanks.

I suppose if you maually uninstalled ALL apps in installer then MAYBE you could restore without issues.

BUT as a general rule it is better to not use backups - but worst case scenario if you have problems is that you restore again so really there is nothing to lose.

As far as the other question goes - once you have built a restore file it can be used on PC or Mac just like official apple software - it is not an issue as iTunes sorts it out for you!

    Thanks everyone for the help.

    Now Pwned.

If anyone's reading this. getting from OSX pwnage tool to windows itunes for restore of the pwned firmware can be a little. finicky. and I wouldn't suggest it. wait for the windows tool this weekend.

    but it's working great now.

I gave the "restore from previous sync" a shot. it filled in my contacts again, call history, favourites, sms, email/wifi settings. and only "1" of my notes.

now I just have to re-install all my apps.

also. my carrier ID is now the much longer "CAN Rogers Wireless Inc." instead of the old "Rogers Wireless".

    Thanks again.

Nice to see someone finding some use of the thread.

from 1.1.2 Gunlock I did a straight DFU restore in windows itunes to 1.1.4 (no problems there)
then ran pwnage in OSX and built the IPSW
rebooted into windows and ran the recovery mode restore of the modified IPSW

also worth noting. it seems as though iTunes NEEDS an internet connection in order to restore. I'm running dualboot OSX(hackintosh)/Win and my lan card is being strange, so no internet on the mac. In OSX, iTunes refused to even give me the option for restore. Stating it's inability to contact the updates server or the itunes store.

I also had some issues getting the stinkin thing into recovery mode after pwnage. Although, it was also around 2:30am. so, that could be part of it.

    but overall, no problems.

first app I grabbed was "Poof", so that I could hide the Neuter app. very not cool to have a friend mess with that.

    good luck
