Question [1.0.2 OTB] Unlocking an unmodified iPhone

    Hi All,

I'm new here and after extensively browsing the PwnageTool forums and reading about the tool, I must commend the iPhone Dev team and the incredible job they're doing in providing end users with an excellent unlocking tool.

I would like to unlock an iPhone I just purchased but there is a bit of conflicting information I've received so far that's making it difficult for me to just up and run with the PwnageTool. So let me start by giving some background...

I recently purchased a refurbished iPhone from AT&T, the phone itself has clearly never been jailbroken or unlocked. It is however activated (i.e. the phone works and I can access the menu and apps and connect the wi-fi etc.)

It is currently running the 1.0.2 firmware. .. so I imagine it's one of the earlier models with the 3.9 bootloader and the original baseband.

I had initially wanted to use ZiPhone to unlock it, and I have detailed instructions on how to do so... but with the release of the PwnageTool, I understand that it is a safer and more update resistant process, so I would prefer using the PwnageTool.

I read the How-To's and guides but there's little information on how to safely unlock a 1.0.2 iPhone, so I was hoping if I could get some help regarding what's the best possible way of going about it... would I need to restore the iPhone using the official 1.1.4 firmware first and then use the PwnageTool or is there something that I'm missing?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help! ... I can't wait to get the iPhone unlocked and working!

Well, to figure out baseband go to Settings>General>About then go to the bottom and see what Modem Firmware you have (this is the baseband). For bootloader, look at the serial number (Settings>General>About>Serial or on the back of the iPhone). Look at the fourth and fifth digits xxxXXxxxxx if it says 28 then it is a week 28 iPhone, if it is 45 then it is a week 45 iPhone. Tell us what baseband and week your iPhone is. Then we can help more. But PWNAGE is pretty easy to use from what I understand as I don't have a Mac. Just open PWNAGE, load the bootloader files and iPhone firmware you want, select activate, jailbreak, and unlock. (I think those are the options), then PWN the iPhone and IPSW then restore in iTunes. Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

Thumbs up appreciated if this helped

@DJ McG: Thanks a lot for that... at this stage any info is useful, since i'm only starting out! ... the baseband is -> 3.14.08_G ... the serial number shows that the iPhone is a week 25 iPhone.

The PwnageTool does look fairly straightforward to use and i'm sure it would've been a breeze if I had a 1.1.4 OOTB .. but I mainly wanted to check and see if there are any incompatibilities if starting with 1.0.2 ... I guess i just don't wanna brick my iPhone by missing a step!

    Thumbs up!

You definitely have bootloader 3.9. All iPhones are PWNAGE compatible. First PWN your iPhone and a 1.1.4 .ipsw. Then restore in iTunes to your PWNED .ipsw. Make sure you check unlock and activate though. Again, Mac users, please correct me if I am wrong.

it's very simple just do an upgrade in itunes to 1.1.4 then follow the iclarifed tutorial at the top of the threads, it gives you everything you need and is very very simple to follow

The only thing I wondered about is because he cannot activate since he wants to unlock, when he restores in iTunes and asks him to set up a new line I wasn't sure if he could just unplug the phone then put in recovery mode and restore. Would that work?

Well when I connect the phone to iTunes right now... by default it asks me to sign up for a new AT&T package. I'm guessing that if i upgrade to the 1.1.4 firmware, i will end up with a non activated iPhone that defaults to recovery mode.. should I just restore it to the 1.1.4 firmware and see what happens?

If you already have the setup a new account screen in iTunes then yeah, you might as well restore to 1.1.4. Put the phone in recovery mode and then restore to 1.1.4. Then you could PWN an IPSW and your iPhone, put the iPhone into recovery mode and restore to your PWNED ipsw.

Download the 1.1.4 iPhone firmware from a trusted source(I.unlock.no).
RESTORE your iPhone with that firmware by holding shift(or mac equivilent?) and clicking on RESTORE.
Then pwn your phone as in the iclarified tutorial.

You can activate it with pwnage so don't worry about that. Just make SURE you use the right firmware, and with pwnage, do everything on 1.1.4.
