I've been reading around a lot and have seen a bunch of mixed reviews on this subject.

Tomorrow I will be picking up an iPhone 3GS, sealed in box, never activated, and will never be on ATT network.

Will pruplera1n be able to jailbreak the phone and activate?
Will redsn0w be able to jailbreak and activate the phone so I can then use ultrasn0w to unlock?

Does the phone need to be activated before even trying to apply a jailbreak?

I know when I get the phone and turn it on it will be at the "slide for emergency, connect to itunes " screen.

If I am on that screen, will I be able to jailbreak it, or will it have to be activated first?

If I can jailbreak it when it is not activated, how will I go about activating it? I read somewhere about the lockdownd file to replace. Is that how I do it? Or will redsn0w already activate the phone when it jailbrakes it?

I'm going to buy a brand new iPhone 3GS in Hungary next week (I hope so...) and using an other mobile partner...

Purplera1n doesn't have hacktivation right now.
Ultrasn0w does do hacktivation tho.

Should be able to JB at "emergency calls" just fine.

Again: it happens to me too... T-Mob H. delayed the "presentation" in Hungary...
But finally I know: I'll use redsn0w and after ultrasn0w... sometimes...

Thanks for the info, such a simple thing but with so much conflicting info it is hard to know what is right! I have seen some posts that say Purplera1n does work if you manually copy the lockdown file,... but if Ultrasn0w works without as much trouble then that is the best option for me!

redsn0w and ultrasn0w is your best option if you need hacktivation.

You indedd need to copy/replace the lockdown file if wanting to use the geohot method
