Default Will using WinPwn and not upgrading the baseband result in continued problems?

I purchased an iPhone 3G and am using AT&T in the US. Unfortunately I updated my phone from 2.0 to 2.0.1 without using WinPwn, so I may have issues with unlocking. From my understanding, by using WinPwn and a customized firmware file, the baseband will not be upgraded. My question is - can some of the 3G connection issues be fixed in the baseband upgrade? If so, if we use WinPwn and do not upgrade the baseband, we will continue to have 3G connection issues. I am using firmware 2.0.1 and am waiting for WinPwn 2.5 so that I can upgrade my phone to firmware 2.0.2. But I am wondering if by not upgrading the baseband I am not fully installing fixes that would improve my 3G connection. Would somebody who has more knowledge as to what functions are contained in the baseband share his/her thoughts? Does the baseband contain call and data connection functionality or is it used solely to provide information as to the status of the phone (with respect to activation and lock/unlock status)? Although I would like to have an unlocked phone, I would rather have one that does not have connection issues at this time. I can also try to purchase an unlocked phone from Italy. It's too bad that there is this idiotic lock restriction in the US! Thank you for any input.

    Default Great Question

Guys, this is a great question. I'm wondering the same thing myself and keep checking this post every day to see if there are any responses, but nothing. This is why I thought it needed a bump.

Hope someone out there has a definitive answer for all of us who are having 3g connection issues, but are unable to take advantage of the 2.0.2 firmware upgrade as we hope to unlock our iPhones some day

I am using a factory unlocked iPhone from Italy, started with firmware 2.0 now at firmware 2.0.2, used PwnageTool 2.0.3.1 to jailbreak and get Cydia/Installer on the iPhone. I am travelling a lot in Europe, using different national (prepaid) simcard of the countries I am in. I did not have any bad connection issues with fw 2.0.1 or 2.0.2. There are areas where no 3G is available, the iPhone switches back then to EDGE/GPRS and again back to 3G when available - never got stuck with no signal.

I know it's no answer to your question, but I am afraid no one will be able to answer cause we dont have an unlock for 3G. I know buying a factory unlocked iPhone is quite expensive but this way I have a working iPhone on the road that always is up to date in terms of firmware.

volkspost, I know that I didn't ask an easy question - haha! Thank you for your input. However, it seems from various reports on different sites that some people who upgraded from 2.0 or 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 did not get better reception, and some people claim that their reception became worse! Since WinPwn is not out yet (and those reports surfaced prior to the release of Pwnage Tools), I am assuming that not much in firmware 2.0.2 (baseband or otherwise) is helping with the 3G connection issues. It is seeming more likely that the connection issues are due to AT&T's lack of enough towers to handle so many people using 3G. I'm sure that Apple can tweak the software somewhat so that the transfer from 3G to EDGE is automatic if the 3G signal is too weak. Also, Apple needs to add a way to turn off 3G more easily (with a home screen icon, if necessary) until reception becomes better. For now, I will wait for WinPwn 2.5 and install a customized 2.0.2 with it, since I don't think that much has been done to improve the 3G connection issues in firmware 2.0.2. I will turn off 3G until I need to browse the internet or install an app on the iPhone. I also have a first generation iPhone, so I can use that when I travel overseas, as it is definitely unlocked. Ultimately, I plan on purchasing a factory unlocked iPhone 3G, but I am hoping that a 32GB version will be sold by the middle of next year (fingers crossed), so I will purchase it when that is released. I want to be able to store a few movies on it without any issues - haha! If Apple tweaks the software to improve 3G connection in firmware 2.1, I may cave in and install it on my iPhone 3G without using WinPwn. In such a scenario, I will choose a better signal over an unlock, if I have to make a choice between the two. Since we can jailbreak with QuickPwn, we now have another option at our disposal, it being understood that we may not be able to unlock the phone if we choose to use QuickPwn. So we can always have an updated and jailbroken iPhone 3G, as long as we don't need to unlock it in the future.

    Default 3g on 2.0 & 2.0.2

Has anyone who was having 3g connectivity issues with an iPhone 3g using firmware 2.0 installed firmware 2.0.2 using winpwn and not upgraded the baseband, seen an improvement in 3g connectivity?

Personally I still have an iPhone with 2.0 and my friend who has no plans of unlocking/jailbreaking has his at official 2.0.2 and both of their 3g connectivity sucks. I'm pretty sure that it is either hardware related or AT&T's network just SUCKS.

Anyone with similar or different results?

were you previously having problems under 2.0.0 & 2.0.1? Also do you live in one of the major cities that are known to have problems such as ny, Chicago or San francisco? Apple claims that the iPhone requests from the cell towers more 3g power than it actually requires thereby not leaving enough signal strength to go around. A problem which they say has been fixed in 2.0.2. But here is the catch. They say that in order to see a difference, everyone would have to upgrade to 2.0.2 because those still on 2.0.0 & 2.0.1 will be still be using a lot of power, still leaving little for everyone else uncluding those who have upgraded to 2.0.2.

I live in NYC and having my phone 2.0.0 right next to my friend's 2.0.2 with updated baseband didn't show any difference at all.
