Can I jailbreak my iphone 3g that is on an unofficial o2 contract?

Got the phone of ebay, all I did was put my o2 sim card in and it worked! So can i jailbreak this ?

Yes, use pwnage tool and it will still activate as it did previously since you're using O2. UK iPhone's will activate through iTunes so long as you're using O2 (regardless of whether it's a real iPhone O2 contract or not).

oh balls, i dont have an apple os

Ive never activated through itunes before, i tried but it wanted credit card details when registering the iphone

You can also use winpwn. It will jailbreak and reinstall 2.0, and you can use iTunes to activate just as you did originally.

How do you activate through itunes, it asks me to register the iphone, i tried but it wanted credit card details after a few steps ..

Need to have an O2 SIM and UK iPhone.

You can have winpwn activate the phone for you. OR, when it restarts and it connects to iTunes it'll say 'activate phone, etc' and simply enter your apple ID you used to activate it previously and that's it. Or, if no previous ID register to create a new apple ID and it'll activate the phone. Works with UK iPhone and O2 sim, regardless of contract. However, why not just have winpwn activate for you?

I wasnt 100% sure whether getting winpwn to activate the iphone was safe or not.

Yea, it is safe. Since you're on O2 you don't need it unlocked, so if you want to jailbreak it you should be set with winpwn. Mine is JB/activated and I have O2 -- no issues.
