I know the WinPwn does not unlock the 3G iPhone, but does it activate it to allow the phone to make calls with an existing AT&T SIM card?
My 1st gen iPhone did not require an unlock, only to get past the Activation screen.
So, am I good to go with the 3G phone now as long as I have a valid AT&T account?

If you have a US 3G phone, and an AT&T SIM card, then do *NOT* set the 'activate' option in WinPwn. If you do you will lose your carrier signal when you restore. If you did, then you will need to make a new custom restore firmware with this option OFF and then restore. iTunes will happily activate your legit AT&T SIM without any personal data being sent to Apple. Even works with Pay-As-You-Go AT&T SIMs cos that is what I did. For 3G, just jailbreak and it will work fine.

Rudidudi: how can you be 'none the wiser'? I thought I answered the original questions quite clearly. You can NOT activate using Pwn if you have AT&T (or any other legit carrier) as it will cause you to lose all access to your cell network. Fortunately, if you have a legit carrier, you do not NEED Pwn to activate for you cos the itunes/apple setup happily activates for you with no issues. So just jailbreak with no activation and you are good to go. That was the original question and it was answered. What is not clear now?

alright, so I've read all these posts, and when I pwn it I get no service.
I did what you've told, and still it doesnt resolve the network connection to att, I can't connect to edge and 3g.
is there a secret way?
I wish I could tell you with more information what I did, but what are the chances of my Iphone permanently not working?
Should I reINstall Itunes?
my device name used to me CGERSON
but now it reads on the Itunes column, untitled.
Should I set it up as a new iphone? I have contacts, pictures, and a lot of valueable information.
