Where did you buy the phone ?? Have they just hard wired the chip from a SIM inside the phone like they do in Hong Kong and sell it as UNLOCKED?? Seems like the only plausible answer !!
I know that I have gone from 2.0.1 to 2.0.2 to 2.1 and the Gevey SIM I have works OK.

According to that site the MB499LL phone is locked to ATT, i recieved it as a replacement unit and it is running on fido. so there is a way to change the lock on them.

See, I have been trying to tell the same thing to everyone!! In my recent trip to Dubai, I saw a shopkeeper selling unlocked iphones and he claimed they were from ATT USA. I checked the box, the serial number on sim card tray and the phone and I can guarantee you that they were all ATT phones. I can say so because I have a 3g 16GB Phone with ATT. After a lot of persistence he told me that the phones were hardware unlocked. So yes!! I saw at least a dozen ATT phones imported!! from USA and hardware unlocked. I have been saying this for the past 3 weeks even messaged a dev team member

Hardware locked can be only hardware unlocked but dev team does not believe.
