More context please? What are actually after? You only need to restore/re jailbreak if you are experiencing problems with your current jailbreak.

my apologies for the poorly phrased question...
I always back-up my iPhone before I do any jailbreak, also using TinyUmbrella to backup the SHSH.
I have previously jailbroken my iPhone using Pwnage Tool after which I will have to restore all the data from the backup I have done. I have used Pwnage Tool up until iOS 4.1 now.
I just helped a friend to jailbreak his iPhone 3GS using Limera1n to iOS 4.1 and after the jailbreak, his iPhone 3GS looks like nothing has changed, except that it has Cydia and it is jailbroken. Not sure if I need to restore his iPhone with the backed up data, I setup his iPhone from back-up.
Nothing changed at all, so I am wondering if there is still a need to restore from backup after jailbreaking with Limera1n. I love Pwnage Tool but the hassle of having to restore the data from backup is too much work. I understand that Pwnage Tool helps to preserve the baseband, but if I do not need to unlock (using the official carrier), what is the most efficient way to jailbreak my iPhone after upgrading?
Sorry for the long story..

Short answer: No
Long answer: Redsn0w, limera1n, greenpois0n, blackra1n all work in a similar way to the original quickpwn (they jailbreak the currently installed iOS version on your iDevice). There is no reason to restore your data from the iTunes backup after this kind of jailbreak.
PwnageTool works quite differently, it makes a "customised" restore file (IPSW) that you then restore with iTunes. This wipes the entire contents of your iPhone. After this it is like your iPhone is brand new and you get the choice to restore your personal files from iTunes backup or set the iPhone up as new.
