Hi there,

I recently installed iAtkos S3 on my ASUS F5SL laptop, which has an ATI HD mobility Radeon 3470, Intel Core 2 Duo T5550, and SiS chipset. I customised the installation by:

- Adding USB Fixes
- Adding Voodoo PS/2 kexts
- Adding Voodoo power kext
- Adding Atheros wireless kext
- Adding ATI VGA kexts (I run an HD mobility radeon 3470)
- Adding the SATA kexts branch

It succeeded and now boots, sometimes it fails to boot and I have to restart. At the moment I'm just trying to do stuff like install and update software, and update the OS, but it keeps crashing.

How can I find out why it's crashing, and fix these problems? I've found a whole load of logs in the console but I don't really know what I'm looking for.

Edit: Most of these crashes are what I believe is called the "Grey screen of death" where a screen comes up telling me to restart the computer in various languages.

That is not good and doesn't offer much clue beside telling you to restart your computer.

Is there any particular running software or related hardware involved when it's crashing?

Well at the moment I'm usually running software update, but often it will just crash if I leave it for long enough. Is there no logs that can tell me what happened?

That may have some clue as why it crashed.
I don't think there is a log file generated with the crash though.
How long do you have to leave it before it crashes? Without any software running and just the OS itself, correct?
Try to give as much details as you can to see if it helps solving your problem,
as this is a bit too far that I want to even get into or spend my personal time to help you.

Yeah the OS itself will usually crash after a while without any software running.

Software update will also reliably make it crash, it gets halfway through downloading an update and then hangs (sometimes grey screen of death, sometimes not).

Give some time frame to better figure out your problem. How long is the downloading taking place? How long is your OS idling before it crashes?
You may have a CPU power management kext shutdown with no user activity.
Did you ever install NullCPU Power Management kext to control it?

The OS when idle takes between 5 and 10 minutes to crash usually.

The downloading usually runs for a couple of minutes before it crashes, I managed to install some small updates that are only a few megabytes, but anything bigger than 10 megabytes has always crashed so far.

The only power management kext I installed was Voodoo power.

I've been making a bit of headway with this, I've been reinstalling with various different options, and have been refining to a gradually more stable installation.

I think you're onto something with power management, so I've been trying things like removing the battery and powering off the plug only, and disabling all power saving options. It's tending to last much longer when idle (half an hour or so).

Currently I'm booting with:
-v cpus=1 maxmem=2048

And I noticed a few things in the boot log which may be of interest:

"com.apple.driver.Airport.Atheros not found and kext not available in early boot" This is a bit strange as the wireless does work...

"ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin:start - watForService(resourceMatching(appleIntelCPUPowerM anagement) timed out"
I have no idea what this referes to!

And then something about USB and EHCI causing an overcurrent situation and the hub it is connected to was disabled? Sometimes I get an error message in the OS about a USB device drawing too much power which might be related?

OK I'm making some real progress, I installed iAtkos with no added drivers except the VIA SATA driver, and it's totally stable, no crashes at all. However with this the wireless doesn't work. I tried the same installation as before, but added the atheros wireless driver, and now it crashes all the time again.

So the problem seems to be the Atheros wireless driver. What should I do to fix it?

lol I have the same laptop and the same version and the same problem... Could anyone help us? Please? Because I can't live without wifi ((( So now I can't connect to wifi and ethernet dont work too ((
