Where to find video drivers and how to use them
I'm new to mac (and osx86). I used iPC to install osx86 on a Compaq Evo D51C (a.k.a. the "D510" series). It runs the Intel 845G chipset and has a P4 @ 2.4ghz, 512mb of ddr 266 ram, and built-in graphics - "Intel Extreme Graphics". My "About this Mac" screen shows that I have no "kext" loaded, and my understanding is that a "kext" is a driver.

I'm sure that my video would work better if I had a driver installed, and it is my understanding that if I had a driver installed then I would gain functionality of "Quartz Extreme" (whatever that is). Also, my current max resolution is 1024x768, but I'm using a Dell 19" lcd. All this is just to say that I think having a driver installed would help me out. My question is: Where do I get a driver, and how do I install it once I have located it?
Thanks for the assistance.

I just found this thread:
http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/f180/63386.htm
It mentions a dude only getting black and white color, but I have full color, it's just that my max available resolution is only 1024x768. Do you still think that I'm just out of luck and I should throw another gpu in there? I have a spare Geforce MX440SE lying around that I could install.
Thanks a lot

I just found this thread:
[HowTo] 1280x800 Full Support - InsanelyMac Forum
It mentions using these files:
AppleIntel830.kext
AppleIntelIntegratedGraphics.kext
... but I don't know where to find them. The article said that they were located in "/System/Library/Extensions" but I do not see them there. Does anyone know where to locate these files?
Thanks again.
edit: I'll also add that I have spare Geforce MX440SE and Radeon 9200SE cards laying around that I could use in this system instead of on-board video, but it looks like they aren't going to get my resolution up to 1280x1024 either. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

edit: I remembered that I had a GeForce FX 5500, so I dropped it in. I'm getting wierd things happening wherever there are moving images (scrolling down web page, moving a window, etc...). How would I go about installing the kext for this card? - Must I reinstall choosing the correct driver in the "customize installation" menu, or is there a way to fix it without reinstalling?
Thanks again

RESOLVED
I decided to try a different distro (is that the right word?). I tried iDeneb v1.3 osx86 10.5.5 and used the "NVInject 256" driver and it worked perfectly.
Warning - during the iDeneb install, I had to wiggle the mouse every few minutes or the install would lock up and I would have to restart.
