I have an Iphone 4 and have 4.3.3 running. I want to upgrade and rebreak the know. What do I need to do? Is there a step by step or info on what to do? Can I just update it and then rebreak it? I am not worried about loosing apps, but I am worried about contacts.

Please search before posting -- this has been asked a LOT in the recent past due to the iOS 5 release, and we've answered the question hundreds of times now...

MOST IMPORTANT: There is NOT an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 for the iPhone 4, this means that if you jailbreak iOS 5, you will have a tethered jailbreak and the phone will need to be connected to a computer every time it hard boots so that you can kick it out of recovery mode. This is a big nuisance and most people prefer NOT to do tethered jailbreaks to their phones.

1) Sync your contacts with iTunes before upgrading. If your contacts are not set to sync with the Mac Contacts or Windows Address Book, do that now!
2) Complete a full backup of the iPhone in iTunes.
3) Copy your pictures and recorded movies directly from the device in USB (your iTunes backup is NOT good enough here, copy the actual files from the phone!)
4) Upgrade iTunes to 10.5 if you haven't already, and complete another backup if you upgrade.
5) If you rely on an unlock, you'll need to use PwnageTool or sn0wbreeze to create an IPSW that blocks the baseband update and restore in Pwned DFU mode.
6) If you do not rely on an unlock, you can restore to the standard factory firmware.
7) Allow iTunes to restore the backup you made to the device, and if your pictures and video are corrupted (like mine were) copy them back from the backup you made.
8) If you restored to factory firmware, you can now use redsn0w to jailbreak the device.

ISnt an unlock needed to put the phone on certain carriers? If I have at&t and recieved the phone from them, I dont need to worry, correct???

That's correct, an unlock is only required if you're attempting to use the phone on a carrier that is different from the carrier you have a SIM for. If you're using an AT&T SIM in an AT&T phone, you don't have to worry about it (beyond the fact that having an unlocked phone does increase resale value if you ever go to sell it).

You should be fine to upgrade to iOS 5.

Do I just allow the phone to update to current iOS?

1) Just click on the Upgrade button in iTunes, it will take care of the rest.
2) When you finish the upgrade, iTunes will ask you if you want to set the phone up as a new phone or restore from a backup. That's when you tell it to restore. If your pictures and videos were corrupted, just copy them back onto the device by adding them to the directory that you have elected to sync photos to/from.

One more question, I have a ton of music on my ipod and I am not worried about loosing it but I cannot edit it. I cant take it off. I am not very experienced with iphone/ipod but my borther is having the same issue with music I put on his ipod.

The iPod/iPhone can only sync music between one iTunes library -- if the library doesn't exist anymore, any syncing of music (or any syncing to a different library) will remove the existing music from the phone. If you bought it with iTunes, it can be re-downloaded, etc. If not, you'll want to move the mp3 files to a single machine, then add it to the iTunes library that you sync from and ensure that you only sync your device to it -- if you sync someone else's device, they'll have to delete all the music on their phone before they can add or remove music. iOS5 lets you delete music from the phone now, from what I've heard -- but I haven't done it personally.

So i sat down and started to follow the steps but I have no idea how to back up my contacts. I searched through several different posts but couldnt really find an easy clear cut way.......

As much as I'd like to help, I really can't hand-hold you through the entire process. Do a quick google search, there are many ways to back up your contacts -- either by syncing them with a program like Outlook, or syncing them with Windows' built in Address Book, or if you're on a Mac, to sync them with the Contacts folder. This is stuff you should be doing on a regular basis -- if you lost your phone, I can't imagine you'd want to lose all of your apps, data, contacts, photos, etc...
