Pros and Cons of JailBreaking
Hi,
I had a JB iPhone 2G but switched to a blackberry after 2 yrs of iPhoning.
Now i have a brand new Officially Unlocked iPhone 4 and an iPad.
Both are not jailbroken and i have not yet decided.
So guys help me out with the pros and cons.
CON
-the iOS become unstable (iP 2G experience)
-Late updates
-Shorter battery life
-loads of time spnt "maintaing" the device - now that i have started working i dont have the kind of time i had in college
PROS
-free apps (not all games and apps are worth paying for - with that said i bough angry birds for my iPhone and iPad - Brilliant buy - Support the developer)
-customizable ringtone
anything else.
at this point I am leaning towards not Jailbreaking.... unless u guys can convince we other wise

Please do not encourage or endorse piracy in any way on this forum. It is against the rules of the forum.
Also, your other comments appear to be only based on your own experience. They are not representative of everyone who jailbreaks.
- jailbreaking does not make iOS more unstable, but some packages installed from Cydia can cause stability problems. This is your own personal choice to install such packages (I recommend you do some research first to ensure that the package supports your iOS version and others report it to be stable)
- Delayed iOS updates is actually true (especially if you want to keep your jailbreak and unlock)
- Shorter battery life is false, in reality - with some of the jailbreak utilities you can achieve better battery life. If you always set your iPhone up as new and are careful to fix push notifications then you should not experience shorter battery life.
- Extra time maintaining the device - partly true, but this is quite minimal.

I'd argue that some of the key benefits to jailbreaking have been overlooked here:
1) Ability to install software that utilizes functionality on the device that Apple keeps under lock and key, away from their developers. Great examples of this are Infinifolder, Infinidock, Status Notifier, SBSettings.
2) Ability to arbitrarily enable or disable functions and features of the OS that Apple withholds from certain devices (e.g., HDR photography on older phones, multitasking on the 3G/S, etc.)
3) Ability to disable Apple's 'kill switch' for App Store applications that you've purchased.
4) Ability to change the default SMS ringtones (this cannot be understated. The iPhone's default SMS tones sound like an exploding toy factory!)
5) Ability to install applications that Apple may have unnecessarily rejected from the app store (Google Voice, etc.)
6) Hugely increased customization of the device and how it behaves and functions.
Beyond that, I agree with Olethros -- the good news is that most of the things you discussed that you did not like are specific to that phone or to the jailbreaking process. Besides the late updates, there is no real 'maintenance' that must be done, most everything is automated these days. If you're careful with what packages you install to ensure that they work for the iOS revision you're using, you should not experience any of the issues you mentioned.
I'd argue it's definitely worth doing -- I see very little in the 'Con' column from my perspective -- and I've been an avid iPhone user since the 3G was first released and have followed every phone upgrade since -- and all of my devices have been jailbroken. Admittedly, in the beginnings of the scene there were issues with some of the software and sometimes it was more difficult than it needed to be, but at this point it's been 2-3 years and all of the software involved has matured greatly in that time.

If u don't wanna help shut up and don't post... This is a valid discussion
How am i insulting their work.... You talk rubbish. All I am asking is if their "Product" is for me
I am simply asking is jailbreaking for me. I'm not saying do or don't
I am just gathering information which would help ME make a decision.
And for that I am asking others for their opinion like the mods have given me. Since my iPhone 2G days a lot has changed and as one of the mods said they have not faced a problem of slowing down or battery problems which I faced with my 2g.
Based the changes that have been made during the years are there any cons of JB or some new pros. I was not aware of SBSettings or The points discussed by n1ck
And yes I will pay for services coz I don't want to cheat anyone
I pay for apps coz the developers who make them put in hard work
So if u don't have a valid point SHUT THE F UP
I have the right to ask questions?

Of course you do, I only objected to your broad statements that didn't necessarily apply to every jailbreak user.

I agree 100% -- you raised legitimate questions that will impact your decision to jailbreak -- I'm definitely in your court on this one.
That said, at this point if you follow a few key steps for the jailbreaking process (I'll list below), then there really are exceedingly few "Cons" in the list.
1) When you restore to the device, do a full restore (Shift-restore or option-restore) as opposed to upgrading first and using redsn0w, etc. You'll get a better jailbreak and a more reliable jailbreak if the device is wiped first, which a shift-restore/option-restore does, where as an upgrade does not.
2) I know this is going to be difficult to decide to do, but it's 100% worth it to set the iPhone up as a new iPhone after the restore. Before doing this, make a backup of your iPhone backup -- then if you want your SMS history, etc., you can extract from that backup and push back to the phone after you've jailbroken, etc. This will ensure you do not have battery issues. A lack of doing this is the #1 cause of battery issues for all model devices.
3) Do minimal research before installing packages. At this point, a good 80-90% of packages have been updated for the current gen iOS revisions (excepting 4.2/4.2.1, damn near nothing works on those yet but that's a moot point, it's not publicly jailbroken yet, etc.), but there are still a few packages here and there that do not work yet and haven't been updated since 3.x.x. Doing a quick google search of "<package name> 4.1 iOS" will almost always quickly answer whether or not it works based on reviews and other experiences.
4) Wait until the dev-team makes a public announcement supporting the latest version of iOS before you upgrade if you rely on an unlock or rely on a jailbreak for key functionality on your device. This is VERY IMPORTANT, and you touched on it already in your post -- it's very easy to get caught up in the new release and be in a rush to upgrade, but this is the #1 cause of people locking themselves out of their phones or locking their baseband until new tools are released. Exercise some patience -- it's the one price that you have to pay to play with the jailbreaks, and it's a pretty light one at that.
Aside from that, there really isn't too much else to think about. Follow those four precepts and you really should have quite a good jailbreak experience and have a solid, stable, reliable device with good battery life that does exactly what it's supposed to and lots, lots more.

It might be worth pointing out that, as you have an iPhone 4 with 4.2, the jailbreak would currently mean it would be tethered.
If you are out anywhere and the battery dies or the phone needs restarting, you would need to jailbreak again to get service.
