    EDIT: Fix Error 3194

The fix is the same regardless of what operating system you are using:

    Quit iTunes
Locate your hosts file, in Mac OS X this is /etc/hosts and in Windows this is c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Open the hosts file with Administrator privileges
Add the following lines to the very bottom of the hosts file:
    74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com
Connect your iPhone to the computer
    Launch iTunes
Put the iPhone/iPad/iPod into DFU mode by turning the phone off and then holding down the sleep and power button for 10 seconds, then release the power button but hold onto the home button until iTunes tells you that the device is now in recover mode
Use the iTunes Restore feature as usual with the iOS device

Once your iOS update is finished, remove the “74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com” line from your hosts file again so that iTunes can properly update as usual
This is an overly technical solution. While it does work, we prefer to recommend that people do the following:

    1. Download TinyUmbrella from The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella and run it
    2. Say yes to any security prompts from TinyUmbrella
    3. Go to the advanced tab, uncheck "set hosts to Cydia on exit", click apply and close Tiny umbrella

Both solutions achieve the same effect but the GUI way is easier for non technical people to follow.

Phone is actually stuck on Apple logo now, I can run fixrestore, and i can run redsn0w however once they've complete they're tasks and need to restart the phone it never restarts. Just stays at the apple logo.

Also i was getting error 1015, which i think means the phone is bricked. which is why i was running fixrestore. However once i fixed that id get the 3194 error all over again. Jst kept flip flopping for me. And now its doing this.

Depends... I'd start by asking the original carrier that the phone is locked to if they will unlock it. That's worth a try.

Otherwise.. yep iPad baseband is your only option (with all it's flaws)

You can restore to stock 4.1 it is still singed on 3gs and go from there jb with greenpoison or redsnow for 4.1
    Abot the unlock

I just buy a gevey ultra iphone 4 unlock chip, also i buy micro sim adaptor.
I made a few modifications to the sim adaptor and combine the gevey with the adaptor and micro sim to fit 3gs 4.1 firmware 5.16.02 baseband and managed to fit it in pozition.
Next i got the message about the source cydia.furi.. Added it installed the mod and reboot the phone
So i accepted the popup from gevey, got the o signal bar but not the unlock..
My question would be now can the gevey ultra for iph4 unlock 3gs if positioned right?
I would like a sure answer, don't guess. Thanks

Edit : i read on another page that it can work

yeah, it's been pointed out to me that for some *strange* reason Apple still signs 4.1 on the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 2G, iPod touch 3G. Not sure why.

I haven't seen any indication that the current generation of sim interposers (gevey and clones) will work with any other device than the iPhone 4.
