Exclamation 3GS upgrading to 4.1 while preserving JB?

    Hi,

Anyone knows how to upgrade to 4.1 while preserving JB? I'm currently using a 3GS on a 4.0.1 JB. I've checked the web but while there are countless discussions on preserving baseband there are none of preserving JB.

There is one site though that details quite a complicated method of downgrading to 3.2.1 and then using CFW 4.1 to fool iTunes. But there is a warning on it and it's not exactly reliable. Seen some people having problem with it, even rejected by iTunes.

If anyone knows anything, this will be great. Thanks.

Are you talking about an "upgrade" where you don't have to reinstall all your apps and settings and stay jailbroken?

That will never be officially supported by pwnagetool. Cydia struggles to handle this type of upgrade scenario. Firstly, many packages installed by Cydia might not be actually compatible with the new iOS version (hacks, tweaks etc). Secondly the upgrade process wipes the system partition and any packages that installed some of their files to the system partition would suddenly be incomplete (thus require a repair/reinstall).

The best you can do is:

Wait for pwnagetool to officially support 4.1 IPSW

It has been clearly stated on this forum countless times that we do not recommend or will support custom IPSW created with non official pwnagetool bundles. This includes sn0wbreeze.

Once the iPhone dev team releases an official PwnageTool update to support iOS 4.1.

Take a iPhone backup (via iTunes) (zip it up or keep it safe)

If you jailbroke with jailbreakme. (oldbootrom and have a SHSH for 3.1.2)
    1. Downgrade to 3.1.2 (stock) using tiny umbrella
    2. Do not set up your iPhone as new or anything.
    3. Jailbreak with blackra1n (this is just to get your iPhone pwned as quickly as possible)
    4. Restore with pwnagetool custom IPSW for 4.1
    5. Restore your current iPhone setup from iTunes backup.

If you jailbroke with pwnagetool 4.0.1
    1. Restore with pwnagetool custom IPSW for 4.1
    2. Restore your current iPhone setup from iTunes backup.
