Untethered jaibreak on brand new iPod Touch 4G
Hey everyone. I will shortly be getting a new iPod Touch 4G. Naturally, I'd like to jailbreak the thing. My understanding is that Redsnow can jailbreak both tethered and untethered but the untethered option is only for those who have saved 4.1 SHSH blobs.
Saved them where? On the iPod? If not, can I download 4.1 blobs somewhere and save them online or on my computer for jailbreaking purposes? What is the purpose of the blobs and why can't they be used with a device that hasn't previously been jailbroken running 4.1 firmware? Is there any way around this? Am I even making any sense? Any help would be very appreciated.

The SHSH is checked by the iPod Touch during restore. Your device will refuse to accept any of the SHSH blob enabled files sent by iTunes that isn't correctly signed with a combination of your device's private ECID and a private key that only Apple has. This will cause the restore to fail.
The current untethered (beta) solution is for those who owned a new bootrom device during the 4.2 beta period and obtained a 4.2b3 SHSH.
The untethered solution consists of a device running 4.2.1 with the addition of the kernel from 4.2b3. Bootup starts with booting 4.2b3 but it switches to 4.2.1 kernel during startup (I think).
They are trying to get this same solution to work with a 4.1 SHSH / 4.1 kernel instead of the 4.2b3 one.
A partial SHSH for the iOS the device is currently runing is stored on the device. No one has managed to extract this yet. If you restore/upgrade to another iOS version or jailbreak the device - you risk destroying the partial SHSH.
Right now, the only way to save your SHSH for a specific iOS version and device is to request it from Apple before they stop signing the specific iOS version. Tiny Umbrella and Saurik's server both can do this.

When I jailbroke my 3rd gen iPod Touch, I saved those blobs by clicking "make my life easier." If I understand what you are saying, the only way that saved data would work is if I had upgraded to 4.2 on my 3rd gen instead of purchasing an entirely new iPod. Am I right?

Yes.. the SHSH are tied to your device, so buying a new device (even the same model) means you can't transfer the SHSH to the new device.
