Regarding itouch gens
Just curious as to which generations and firmware versions of the itouch can be jailbroken? I am currently in the market to purchase one and would like to know. Thanks

All can be jailbroken.
Only 1st gen and early 2nd gen can always be jailbroken untethered.
iOS 4.1, 4.0, 4.0.1, 3.1.3, 3.1.2 can be jailbroken untethered on all iPod touch models (assuming you have the correct SHSH)

iPhone 3GS 32GB (4.3.3; Pwnagetool) factory unlocked oldest SHSH 3.1

Alright, just repeating what you said practically; so 4th gen ipod touches, can be jailbroken untethered as long as it is firmware 4.1 and below. Most ipod touches at factory are what version usually?

We don't get enough reports about such things to really give you a fair answer.
4.2.1 is still only a few weeks old and was a last-minute release, so you will probably still find that iPod touch models bought now have 4.1.
The problem is you will NOT have a 4.1 SHSH so you have one chance at jailbreak. If it doesn't work or if you screw it up later by installing or updating something from Cydia that stops the phone booting. Then you must restore to 4.2.1 - which is tethered jailbreak only for now.
