I would like to retrive my late son's musical recordings from his ipod. However, it has been locked and is now disabled but I can still ping the iPod becuase it is connected to my wireless network, but SSH was apparently not installed.
I tried blackrain and now I have a tethered jailbroken device (yuck) but still no SSH or any way to access the partition with the data.
Can anyone point me to a procedure that will allow me to remotely mount the iPod's partition and copy its files?
One possible option:
Download:
redsn0w 0.9.6 rc8 and the SSH2 bundle from here:

Download a 4.1 or 4.2.1 iPod touch 3rd gen IPSW from here: http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm
Run redsn0w, browse to either of these IPSW, select only "install custom bundle", then browse to the SSH2 zip file.
Follow the instructions in redsn0w to enter dfu mode and when the procedure is complete, it should reboot back to normal (if it doesn't force the device to reboot by holding down both home and power buttons for up to 30 seconds)
Then you can either use wifi or the usbmux tunnelling to access the files via SSH.
If the above procedure doesn't work, then one guaranteed option is this:

Unless you managed to backup a 4.1 SHSH for this device before Apple stopped signing 4.1, you will need to adapt this procedure to use iOS 4.2.1
As long as home and power buttons work, you can ALWAYS get into DFU mode, it is a hardware based function. The timing can vary if you can't shut the device down before attempting to get it into DFU. The device needs to have power via USB - and you need to trigger a reboot by holding both buttons, then hold both buttons for approx 5-7 seconds before releasing the power button, but continue holding the home button. Within 5-25 seconds your computer will register that the device is in DFU.
If that doesn't work, your timing is off, or the device isn't getting enough power from your computer (try a USB hub, or even a wall charger will work)

My mistake. Thanks! The first option gave me root access via wireless ssh.
Now that I am inside I tried renaming the keychain-2.db file to something else, but the iPod is still disabled. Is there a way to un-disable the iPod?

Renaming/moving keychain is way too brute force. It breaks your ability to join a wifi network for example
