Default new ipod, how to update?

    I bought a 16GB ipod touch from a friend.
    It is jailbroken @ 2.1.1.
Some apps wont install (they need a more recent firmware).
I am new to the ipod scene.
Is there a direct link to 3.1.2 ipod touch firmware (same as the iphone?)
if so, should I use redsn0w to jailbreak too?
    Thanks.

This is considered WAREZ, which is not allowed on this forum.

You can get OS 3.0 for the iPod touch for free, 3.1 and higher cost money.

I did a bit of research, I did not know ipod touch firmware cost money.
So if I "buy" 3.1.2 firmware, I can jailbreak it normally with redsn0w?

Yes. Currently, you have to pay at least US$4.99 for major iPod touch updates
(eg 2.2 to 3.0 or 3.0 to 3.1) but not minor updates (3.1.2 to 3.1.3)

I saw an article that said Apple had made 3.0 free for all iPod touch owners. However I can't find the article right now to confirm if that is now true.

The reason Apple does this is due to laws in the US related to Apple reports it's finances. The iPhone is on a subscription with the carrier (in the US the subscription is for 2 years). The iPod touch is a one-time sale item.

This causes differences in the finance/accounting of profits made from these two devices and Apple is careful to follow the US law on this.

It all might change soon as Apple has formally asked for permission (and received approval) to report their finances in a different way.
