Downgrading from 4.2.1 to 3.1.3 on 8GB second gen MC model

I'm trying to figure out a way to fix my broken Wifi, or at least ascertain if it is indeed a hardware issue. I've never downgraded my firmware and I'm having trouble...
I've got the 3.1.3 IPSW on my desktop, try to restore normally and I get the 'device does not support this firmware' or whatever that error is. I tried editing my host file to point gs.apple.com to the Cydia IP, that didnt do anything. I tried downloading TinyUmbrella but couldn't get it to load properly, I actually got it running but going into the package and loading the loader JAR file, but either my SHSH blob isnt on file with Cydia or its not communicating with the server properly.
Without Wifi I cant see the main Cydia screen and see if they have my SHSH on file, I'm just wondering how I should proceed. Any help would be greatly appreciated

There should be no shsh requirement for 3.1.3 on your device.
We can't help with such vague details. Publish failed restore logs on pastebin.
May require a downgrade to iTunes 9.1 but I doubt it.
Problem with iPod touch firmwares on lower than 4.0 is we can't legally link to original ipsw (as for many iPod touch owners 3.1 was a paid upgrade)
