Default Cannot restore OR upgrade firmware after jailbreak

    Hi,

I had firmware 3.1.2 and jailbroke with blackra1n. The jailbreak went fine, Cydia was downloaded, and I managed to select "make my life easier" in its options... But then Cydia stopped working. I decided to restore my device with iTunes to the factory settings but it gives me error messages (not eligible for this build, etc.). I tried downloading the 3.1.2 file that can be found online, and clicking the restore button in iTunes while holding shift to select that file, but I get error messages again.

I understand from another thread that Apple no longer supports 3.1.2, but I would think iTunes would automatically upgrade me to whatever it DOES support now. Is this not the case? I really don't know how to un-jailbreak this device. It doesn't matter to me what firmware version I switch to at this point...

Any suggestions for what went wrong and how I can fix it? Thanks.

You must have a 3rd generation iPod touch (sold after september 2009) Or have you posted in the wrong forum. Was your jailbreak a tethered jailbreak?

How long ago did you try the make my life easier option?

There should be no restriction on restoring an iPod touch 2nd gen to 3.1.2

Yes, I do have a 3rd gen ipod, and it was a tethered jailbreak (this is one of the reasons I want to undo it - I didn't realize it was tethered till after the fact). All of this happened yesterday (including the "life easier" option).

If you have not managed to restore any IPSW then.. you does the iPod still bootup? (with the assistance of blackra1n)

Your best option is to limp along with 3.1.2 and try to fix your installed Cydia. Your only other option is to restore to 4.0.2 and lose jailbreak for now..

    Thanks for your response.

Yep, I can boot up if I connect to my computer. I though about trying to recover the files from Cydia, which may or may not be possible. But my preference at this point would be to upgrade to 4.0.2 and get the device back to normal. Problem is, iTunes won't upgrade me. (Unless the upgrade is done differently than the restore that I tried?)

it often happened to somebody who have jailbreak for a while. if it did happen to you, you need the aid of iOS Data Recovery for iPad, it is a very functional software to recover data of iPad after jailbreak, you can have a try next time.
