Default iPod wont get in DFU nor Recovery mode. Please help!

I work with iPhones all the time, but this chick I fixed an iPhone for asked me if I could fix his sons ipod which has been disabled by his little cousin after trying to guess the passcode. Or at least thats the story I got from her. Anyways, I said -yeah I can do it... assuming it was the same thing as an iphone on which I just do the power and home button hold thingy to get it into dfu and then just restore.
The weird thing is that it wont do it! I know both buttons work. But if its on and I hold them both for over a minute, it will never do a soft reset as any iphone would. Then if I slide to turn it of, hold the home button and plug it to the computer, it will turn on normally to the disabled screen. I dont understand. I know the home button work cause if I lock the screen and press it, it will light up again. So it works. Has anyone gone through this issue?
Also, I dont know whether its the first one or 2nd gen ipod. It does not have a camera tho.
Well, any help will be appreciated !!

Oh, yeah. The bad part is this kid's computer went bad. So cant go that way.

plug it into the computer, and there is a jailbreak program that puts it in DFU for you(dont wait for the jailbreak once its in just unplug) once its in quickly unplug the ipod and it will stay in DFU then restore.

and if that wont work(thats the easy way) then do this(only if you really know what your doing)

1.) First download the required this archive Download DFU.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

2.) Extract the archive to the root of your hard drive, should be C:/DFU/

3.) Connect your iPhone and ignore iTunes

    4.) Goto Start - run

    5.) Next type in “c:/dfu/dfu iBSS.m68ap.RELEASE.dfu”

6.) Wait for iPhone to show a “white” screen. So you are in DFU mode

Buddy, I tried but nothing happens with the iPod. It says "looking for iPhone' USBMuxListenerCreate: No error" Any thoughts?

The iPod touch should work exactly the same as the iPhone.

Are you sure the device detected USB power via the dock connector? Without this, it won't go into DFU mode no matter how much you mash the buttons.

The technique @Fr0z0n is talking about will ONLY work on iPhone 2G, 3g or 1st generation iPod touch.

I've deliberately got my iPhone into this "too many password guesses, locked out" stage and managed to bypass this without knowing the passcode (on iOS 3.x) - but I did have SSH pre-installed and a pre-existing successful pairing of the phone with my computer (which you don't have as the kids computer has crashed).

Yea, his mom says she will have it repaired, I dont know if after the repair the computer will do any good to the ipod.
iTunes does recognizes the iPod cause a warning comes up when I plug it in. I know both buttons work, there was a few times that it turned off after holding them both for 5 sec. but while I keep holding them it will just start up again, wont go into DFU.
I guess not to fail her I will have to take it to the Apple store to see if there is something they can do.
Its definitely 1st or 2nd gen iPod touch I believe because it does not have a camera.
    Thanks once again.

If You are still having an issue with putting it into dfu mode, there might be a problem with the lock or the home button. Even though you say they both work, they might not be working properly. If you know how I would say you should try putting the mother board into a different back plate with a different glass to restore it and them place them back in the original casing. I only suggest this if you are very familiar with takeing apart an iPod touch. I have found that this worked for me when I came across this problem.

Hey thanks for chiming in dude. I was told at the store that the buttons work but there is some sort of switch inside that tells the motherboard when each key is pressed and whether there are more than 1 key pressed, which was defective. So she ended up trading it in plus $99 and got a new 4G iTouch. Pretty good deal huh.
