    Default Hole in the touch

OK, so all this jailbreaking represents genius on the part of some very, very bright individuals. I prostrate myself before your extreme cleverness.

But...am I alone in thinking that the iPod touch's inability to play streaming audio represents a huge hole in this product? Or have I missed something obvious?

The touch has this groovy wifi interface. It's got, I assume, hardware decoding of several different codecs. So, what the heck's the dang deal here anyways then? I mean, I can lol around and listen to NPR or other news sources on my N800...why not the Touch?

Is anyone working on a streaming media app for the iPhone/Touch?

You can stream media to the iPod Touch. There are apps that let you stream media off your computer to the Touch.

There's also a lot that's possible that hackers haven't developed yet for the iPod Touch. The device is very, very new and we're just starting to see the first fruits of the hackers work.

When the original iPod first came out, there was nothing available for it at all. Now you can install linux on it, run your own codecs, etc. The original iPod is pretty much only limited by its hardware capabilities now.... if you're willing to put in the time/effort necessary in installing all that crazy stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised to see an extremely capable version of linux running off the iPod Touch sometime in the next two years. If it's a software barrier, it's only a matter of time before it gets cracked even if it takes years.

So, HOW do you play streaming media on the touch? Say I have server software streaming an MP3 stream at http://ipaddr/stream.mp3.

What is the application on the touch-side that will play that stream?

    Sorry, that should be http://ipaddr:9000/stream.mp3

When I enter that URL into Safari on the touch, I initially get a QuickTime "Q" icon, but that immediately changes to a page with a "play" triangle icon with a circle and slash through it...meaning that Safari doesn't know how to play that stream.

Again, am I missing something obvious here?

for one, safari will play quicktime movies, mp3 files, and aac files hosted on any website. So if you want, a simple way to do this is just to host the files on a website, connect to it via safari on the touch, and it'll play.

OK, I've tried this now and...yes, you are right! An MP3 file hosted on a web server does indeed play. But the server I'm trying to stream media from is more "shoutcast" like than a webserver. (Actually, it's a SlimServer a.k.a. SqueezeCenter.) The touch just doesn't seem to be able to play that stream, nor any other shoutcast streams that I've tried.
