I have a similar problem. Tonight I was in some very mild rain and noticed that the bottom row of keys on the keyboard (zxcv...) aren't working. The area (roughly the same level as the slider to open the phone). I was testing in various ways but ended up using Sketches to see what was going on.

An image on the screen is here: http://bigrecruit.com/SketchesSnapshot.jpg
and a movie of the behavior is here: http://bigrecruit.com/iPhoneProblemScreenTouching.m4v

When I move my fingers diagonally (which shows it better) when I get to a certain point in the screen and straight line or a slightly angled line is quickly drawn. Moving back and forth in the area produces no response.

Is this a hardware or software issue?

I am of course screwed because the phone is unlocked. I could revirginize but Apple now requires a at&t account.

    Would a firmware restore help?

    Same Problem here :-(
Seems like an area of around 1cm on the lower end of the IPhone has lost iīs ability to react on touches.
Very sad. Any Ideas how to restore? I might re-install 1.1.1. The phone is unlocked via AnySim ...

Thanks for your Ideas in advance.

    Greetings.

    Done - no success!
I re-installed 1.1.1, jailbreaked, activated... and still the last part of the screen is without the "touch" function.
    In other words :

I have a wunderful nice jailbroken, activated - f****ing useless brick.

    Why?

Cantīt write sms, canīt switch from album to artist in ipod and so on....

Well, that was it for me. Good bye IPhone. HelloMoto!

What I ended up doing was reinstall and relock the phone. I was still in the 14 day period so I returned the phone to apple and said it was a gift to someone that didnt want to change their carrier. They didnt "take it into the back to check it out" because they didnt think it was activated. I ate the $40 restocking fee and then bought another iphone. So basically it cost me $40 to get it repaired.

    Maybe you could:
    1. Do what i did.
    2. Relock and switch to at&t and then get apple to fix the phone because its still under warranty.
    3. Get a friend with at&t activate the phone with their account. Take it to apple for warranty repair. Get the sim from apple when you drop it off for repair. Return sim to friend. (have friend cancel data plan). Get repaired iphone from apple. Unlock.
