[2.1.1] Found it on apple servers!
I friend of mine ask me to update his iPod, and i was searching google for the latest firmware and found at iphone-freaks a post for all iphone firmwares. They redirects you to a xml that was discovered by the communications between the PC and Apple servers.
In this xml file, searched for 2.1 firmware an i found a iPod2,1_2.1.1_5F138_Restore.ipsw. Could it work, someone already test it?

sometimes they use a seperate numbering scheme for the people with iPod touches that don't pay for the upgrade but still want the bug fixes. There was actually a 1.1.5 firmware for iPod touch, I expect this is the same general idea.

This is the firmware file for the iPod Touch 2. It is 2.1.1 build 5F138 because they use a new GID key meaning we can't decrypt any of the IMG3 files. One major thing about this is we can't decrypt the ramdisk to get the ASR key. To top it off, they will probably use this iPod1buildnumber+1 scheme for a while, so that we don't use the iPod 1 ASR key since usually builds will share the same ASR key.

what chronicproductions says is the correct answer - 2.1.1 was designed for the 2nd gen touch only. this is also the only fw thats been released for the 2g so to answer the question it is safe..
