My cheating, SoB ex-boyfriend flitted with his 3GS and left his 3G iPhone behind. I unlocked it to use it as my own, and had a poke around inside using CyberDuck.
I came across a couple of files while searching for "sms" (yes, I was looking for dirt!) one of them being a file called SmsDynamicLib.dylib. I opened it with TextEdit and of course its just a pile of in-comprehendible jargon. But the file is quite large, there's a lot of text there and I was wondering what it might contain?
Obviously containing the words SMS and LIB, I would assume it has something to do with texts that he may have sent or received, but of course I've learnt by browsing through the phone that when you think you've struck gold, you're usually just looking at nonsense.
Does anyone know what's in this file? And possibly how to read it?

Also found another file in the iTunes back up called dynamicdictionary.mddata, or something like that, which contains loads of words all packed together. I can see some of the words that I've typed into the phone since I've had it so I figure it keeps record of new words or something?

Any help will do, driving myself a little bit insane trying to figure things out, and I really know nothing at all about computers. So muchos gracias to any help at all.

SmsDynamicLib.dylib is code for the SMS application. That is not useful for you.

You need to look at SMS.db this is a SQLite3 database and you can view it with one of many free SQLite3 viewers. Or if you are on unix you can type:

strings SMS.db

to get a list of all the text strings within this file, including those from deleted messages.

The other file dynamicdictionary.mddata is used to help improve predictive text input/spell checking. This is somewhat of a serious security problem as it does record a lot of what you type. The goal is to help you type words that were not in the default dictionary but it can reveal a lot.

You can do the same trick

to get a list of words typed.

Personally, I would suggest you not bother opening this can of worms, but if you do want to. The information above might help.
