From what I have read on this forum, you should stay away from the ipsw provided from Apple.
Personally, I went from 1.1.4 to 3.0 just before 3.0.1 was released. I played around with 3.0 for a while and got accustomed to the jailbreak before going to 3.0.1. It made that hack seamless. I will wait for the Dev Team to come up with a jailbreak and see how stable it is before going to 3.1. I didn't see much of any difference for us folks with old (but sill working) iPhones.

If you guys have a 2G device you can install the 3.1 firmware without any problems
But you shouldn't update to 3.1 directly because when you then start using your custom IPSW you will most likely get a 1600 error from itunes.
What you should do is restore to 3.0 or 3.0.1 firmware & jailbreak with redsn0w first.
One's thats done reconnect your phone to itunes again & simply shift/restore with your custom build 3.1 IPSW.

Should have mentioned...
That I am running on Windows XP. I am currently jailbroken on 3.0.1 (unlock wasn't necessary). If I download one of the custom ipsw files on the net, and update iTunes to 9.0, should I have any trouble with a shift+restore to the custom ipsw?

Yep
As long as you don't go into DFU or restore mode & just shift, select the 3.1 custom ipsw, & click restore button your be fine.
Everything will work including your unlock
If you need a trusted place to get firmware look here

BTW
I've just restored my 2G with a 3.1 custom ipsw on the new itunes 9.0.1 with no issues

Thanks!
I will download all and decide later. I will have to make a list of Cydia programs/hacks that I have. Tried the AppBackup and didn't work when I went to 3.0.1.
The source for the firmware tip is GOLDEN! I certainly appreciate it. Won't need to ask for it again.

Update:
@n350z-I slept on it and took the leap. Complete update with hactivation. All seems to work for now. The ipsw installed Icy, which I couldn't get to install when I went to 3.0. Not sure if I will try it or not...
Never meant to hijack this thread... Do you recommend updating to 3.0-3.0.1 before going to 3.1 as the original poster asked?

I was able to upgrade a 1.1.4 iPhone to 3.1 using a custom IPSW on iTunes 9.0 without any problems, so I guess it should work.

If you've used a custom IPSW to installed 3.1 & everything is working
There is no need to do anything else coz you're all done.
Just Enjoy
