The jailbreaking teams have proven that they have an exploit that can be used to unlock 05.12.01 but we don't know if they have had time to turn that exploit into a working unlock yet. Expect this unlock to come out after OS 4.0 is officially released in late June.

You have 1 choice for an unlock today (request an official unlock via the carrier your iPhone is actually locked to. This will likely require you to pay out the remainder of your contract - but the unlock will be official and continue to work with future OS updates) - this does not work for AT&T or if you have imported an iPhone from another country.

Turbosim stopped working before OS 3.0 was released - so that is a waste of money and time - it will not work for you.

You are completely wrong about your theories that experts can just SCP in a new baseband. Those working on unlocks have 3G iPhones with baseband bootloader 5.8 and can use fuzzyband to downgrade baseband when required. There is no other special secret.
Guess I been wasting my time with the GeoHot version. Late June? That really sucks, mine as well just get AT&T. Olethros, I was also wondering could it be unlocked if it were a hard mod? This could end up costing more money than getting AT&T but with enough research I think I could get it done.

    Thanks,

Yes on the 3G it is possible to remove the chip that holds the baseband and bootloader, reflash the basbeband bootloader to 5.8 then solder the chip back onto the logic board and reassemble the phone. Then you can use fuzzyband to downgrade the baseband.

Apple would of course deny warranty if they found a phone that had this done to it.

Your iPhone is not locked to T-Mobile. If it's a US iPhone, it's locked to AT&T. AT&T does not provide unlock codes for the iPhone (and likely will not until the exclusivity runs out.) You would need to request the code from AT&T -- and they will not provide one.

If you have an O2 iPhone you can contact O2 and have them provide the unlock code, but you'll need to be an O2 customer, will need to have been one for at least 90 days I believe, and will need to pay out the ETF if you're not out of contract. Same is true of other carriers outside of the US. Most provide unlocks for a fee if you've been with them for a period of time, etc.

If it's an AT&T iPhone though, your only option is soft-unlock at present -- which doesn't work on 3.1.3 yet.

I am in a lot of trauma here!
I downgraded my iPhone 3g IOS 4.2.1 to 3.1.3. I was using it on a Non-AT&T sim as I belong to a different country. Now it is locked and shows a 'slide for emergency call' screen.
Can it be unlocked or is my iPhone now just a paperweight?
Please tell me if I can downgrade to IOS 3.2.1 and then jailbreak and unlock it. I am really unaware of baseband stuff! Really pls help!
