I would like to know which features of the 3.0 software will not be available for 1st generation iPhone, I know about MMS but according to Apple there will be others,

Using it on my 2G and havent found anything else not documented.

MMS not working and have not tried bluetooth though. All else seems to work OK.

A2DP (stereo) bluetooth support will also not be available.

Do the vcards work? Or do you need mms for the vcards? If not, can you at least use cut and paste from the contact into a text message.

SwirlyMMS works great, I just can't believe Apple couldn't add MMS to 1st gen iPhones, it really sucks!

Im indifferent about MMS...dont really use it...i prefer email. its cheaper.

if they take more than the bluetooth thing away from me, then id be pissed, but as of now, I'm indifferent.

My educated guess on this matter is that the lack of MMS is due to performance problems of MMS over GPRS/Edge connections. Although MMS pre-dates 3G, in the past pictures and other things that can be send on a MMS were much simpler and smaller. Now with mega-pixel cameras, audio and, some day, even video, the average size of MMS is much bigger. Therefore it will take longer to transmit over GRPS/EDGE.

Apple (and maybe some operators) may fell that the users, due to the lack of the proper technical understanting will shift the blame for the poor MMS performance to the quality of the handset or the network, something that they hate. Very similar to "I do not let apps run as daemons - aka background process - because it may impair battery duration". They think they know better.

As for the Bluetooth, the baseband processor subsystem of the 1st gen, based on the old (around 2002) SGOLD2 Infineon chip, may have problems with the A2DP requirements for some quality standard. Note that A2DP requires both a lot of bandwidth as well as a strict sync with the song. You may tolerate a choppy phone call, but you will hate to listen to "stereo music" on your expensive headset that is bellow par.

Right now tethering is not working on the 1st gen iPhones too. I do not see any reason for that. If tethering makes into 3.0 and is removed from 1st gens, then I would say that Apple is not adding it to force people to upgrade... and that will be a bad and shameful move. But hey, Apple is not much different from Micro$oft....
