+ or 00 - country code - area code - local number!!! this is the standard and it will be recognize everywhere!!! also by your iphone 3g with 3.0 fw without using copy and paste!
Don't you get that "00" is not valid everywhere??? It's the IDD for your country and other places that use it to access international dialing.

What is the problem with that? Yes, it will not show the +, but aside from that, the number even formats correctly! That's the important part of it.
For example if I feed:
+552188884444
it formats correctly as:
55 (21) 8888-4444
The purpose of the + is to serve as an indicator that the number that follows is in the following format:
Country-code + area-code + number
Printing the + or not, is not the issue, but the issue is guiding the iPhone/iTunes formatting and that is only correctly accomplished with the "+" format.

Wait, so you're saying that there's a way we can pick our own phone number now??
1. What if you pick a number that someone else already has?
2. What number will show up in your account settings with your carrier?
3. Is this illegal or detectable?
4. Can you choose the area code too?
Please explain, if I am confused.

ok aviegas i'm in agreement with you but what i want to say is: if you cannot fisically use + symbol, the alternative is to write 00 and this is valid everywhere, believe me! your example: +552188884444 can be write 00552188884444 and will be recognize as you wrote 55 (21) 8888-4444. right?

NO!
Formating is done according to country specific rules. Country selection is determined either by the UI Regional Settings or by the presence of the +. And 00 will not format properly. It may for you because it part of your local setting, 00 to trigger international dialing. But not for other locales. Believe me, I've been dealing with these rules since 1.1.2.
And although one cannot directly enter the + in the beta, using copy-and-past it can be done!

Setting "own" or "my" number means storing the actual phone number in the SIM Card.
Until 3.0, the iPhone would register the real number in the SIM card during iTunes activation. With fake activation and factory unlocked phones, there is no way for the iPhone to know the real number during activation. Thefore the number will not be registered to the SIM card.
Alternatives were to use apps that would interface with the SIM Card to add the number there. Typically these were apps that handled modem AT commands (minicom, iGSM and sendmodem).
What good does having the "own number" stored? Well, it will show on iTunes, it will show on the settings and will show on the Contacts (if started from the phone app).
But the best use for that comes when one has many SIM cards: you put the SIM card in and you know the phone number. I myself rely on that, specially since even permanent marker then to wash out from the SIMs.
