Is it safe to restore to OS3.0 GM on a pawned iPhone?
I was wondering if anyone out there had a pawned iPhone (EDGE) and tried restoring to this latest OS3.0 GM software that is all over the net. Does it work like all other software updates have in the past? Should I wait until next week when the official version is released?

Bad idea I just did it and am stuck at the activation screen, I actually did an upgrade not a restore, i had been said by doing so the phone would remain unlocked. Need to wait and hope the dev team comes through now or I might be left with a paperweight.

Install iTunes 8.1
Restore to 2.2.1
Create custom firmware with Pwnagetool (doesn't seem to work with quickpwn)
Option restore to custom firmware
Install iTunes 8.2
Option update to 3.0 firmware

And it is.
Unlocked != Jailbroken != Activated.
Your iPhone is still unlocked, it's just not activated anymore.
This is because of a new activation scheme that Apple introduced in 3.0 (notice that when you upgrade the progress window says "Contacting Activation Server"?)
Some people had success somehow by disconnecting the computer before upgrading or going from 2.0.2 to 3.0 or from a 3.0 Beta to the final 3.0, but I was unsuccessful at any attempt (well, I didn't try going from 2.0.2 or 3.0 beta to 3.0 GM actually).
You don't need to wait for the 3.0 jailbreak though, you can restore to 2.2.1 and jailbreak it again with QuickPwn.

3.0GM is the Gold Master, meaning that it *is* the version that is coming out on Wednesday. Friday is the 3Gs release.
So, if you want to go to 3.0, by all means... go wild, have fun with it.
Waiting until wednesday isn't all the sudden going to get your newly locked iPhone 2G re-unlocked with nothing happening on your end.
As I view that having a phone that will work on your carrier is most important, I would say to go ahead and do the DFU mode downgrade, get your phone re-unlocked and then do an upgrade to the 3.0GM as has already been outlined several times on these forums as being a safe upgrade path.

Then why did a lot of people coming from a Jailbroken 2.2.1 find themselves with a unactivated (albeit unlocked) iPhone?
