Hi i am trying to download the 3.0 ipsw for the iphone 3G but everytime i download the file from here:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....1_Restore.ipsw

it appears to have a code, it also opens a folder with no IPSW!! It has 3 DMG FILES, the three of them with numbers 018-5301-002.dmg, how can i turn this into IPSW.... or can somebody give me other where page where i can download the IPSW ready to be used in itunes for the software unlock. i really need some help........ thanks!

the downloaded file should be ending .ipsw.
If you are on a Mac, use Firefox. Safari sometimes tries to unzip the file.
Dont unzip the ipsw, no playing around with the dmg's ;-)

Select the correct one and download.

Geez, I'm sorry, but this is driving me crazy.
How can you even think about unlocking your expensive iPhone without having most basic computer skills?

In Safari's menu bar click on 'Safari' and then on 'Preferences'.
In the 'General' tab uncheck 'Open "safe" files after downloading'. Done.
No more opening files automatically after downloading.

An option that should be unchecked by default. Nothing's really "safe" out there.

Nothing personal! I just don't get it.
