Hey everyone... I'm working on my first go at all this, I'm living abroad, using an unlocked 2G with 2.2 FW with my Mac.

I'm wanting to upgrade to 3.0 so I followed the proper iClarified article... Updated my iTunes to the current 8.2.1 (couldn't find just 8.2 for mac online anywhere) but when Option-Clicking "Restore" and selecting the "iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw" I get an error message "The iPhone could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible." I believe the first time I tried this it gave me error 1641 and linked me here: Update and restore error messages on iPhone and iPod touch .

I've tried going into DFU mode and restoring, but iTunes just bugged me trying to make me download THEIR 3.0 FW and telling me that I have to restore the iPhone before using because I put it into DFU mode. I've tried different usb cables, different usb ports.

The phone is still working, so I'm going to finally go to bed and work on this more tomorrow, but any advice? Has 8.2.1 made a problem that 8.2 didn't? Can I find 8.2 for Mac anywhere? Oldapps isn't supplying Mac versions anymore.

Maybe I'm way off. Come to my aid!

Before going through all that trouble, why don't you simply allow iTunes to download 3.0 on its own while restoring and then use redsn0w? Or am I getting you completely wrong?

Have you tried to manually update itunes?

The latest version of iTunes can be automatically downloaded and installed by using Software Update in the System Preferences of OS X. Click on the Apple in the upper-left hand corner, and then click Software Update... The system will check for new software, and will list all updates on your screen. Updates for iTunes will be included on this list

Windows

Start then all programs then Apple software update
then same as above

Horstbert -- I didn't know that that is an option? I guess I'm new at this and was just following the iClarified directions, which said to option-restore with the aforementioned FW. Should I just let iTunes give my iPhone it's 3.0 FW?

X_Spec -- I just got the latest iTunes (8.2.1) from the apple website after not being able to find iTunes 8.2 anywhere online... would this make a difference?

uninstall itunes
restart pc
install latest itunes from here
then sync

Yes, this is of course an option! By option-clicking the restore button you basically do the same thing, only more complicated. I don't understand at all why iClarified is telling people to do it this way. Most probably because they want to make sure they get the right bundle, just in case Apple released a new one in the meantime. But as long they haven't, and since 3.0 is still the current release this is the case, a normal click on restore in iTunes will do the trick. No need for DFU or recovery mode either.

My iPhone is officially upgraded to FW 3.0 from 2.2.

Not sure EXACTLY which thing that I changed from my last go fixed the issue, but I changed from iTunes 8.2.1 to iTunes 8.2 (visit Download all versions of iTunes for Windows & Mac - ReviewPk for all of the old versions of iTunes for Mac since Oldapps doesn't have them), I updated my mac with the newest OS update, and then finally, I just allowed iTunes to download and install the 3.0 firmware onto my previously unlocked 2G iPhone.

When the firmware update was completed, my iPhone was updated and it held onto its unlock from whoever unlocked it for me 6 months ago. I made a call first thing, checked the internet usage, and everything is working perfectly (in Zambia of all places!) without running redsn0w.

I was feeling a bit cocky, so I decided to update my roommate's iPhone as well... he was running some 1.x FW so we ended up having to have iTunes 8.2 use its 3.0 software to do a restore and wipe his iPhone completely, but he had everything backed up. We ran redsn0w 0.72 just like the iClarified article said to do, and it all worked according to plan, no hassles.

The only small thing was I had to find iTunes' 3.0 FW it downloaded which was on my mac in the Library>iTunes>iPhone Software Updates folder... pretty easy.

All in all, thanks very much to Horstbert and X_Spec for the advice, and Scoobyman for the link to the old iTunes for Mac versions.

You're welcome! I think the iTunes downgrade wasn't even necessary, it should've worked with 8.2.1 too!
