Hey,
I'd like to upgrade to 3.1.2, but I might want to jailbreak in the future (not now). Is there any way I can do that without causing any problems to jailbreak at a later date? I've asked o2 to unlock my phone, so I'm not worried about a software unlock. Once o2 have done that, there's no need for me to worry about that anyway?

I am assuming you have a 3G iPhone. If so, you can always downgrade OS to a version that can be jailbroken. For example downgrade from 3.2 to 3.1.2 so you can jailbreak. That said, it is safest to get on the pwnage train snd stay there. You may find a newer baseband does not work with older OS. That can be prevented by upgrading with pwnage. Aside from that you are pretty safe to upgrade when you want.
Thanks, I'm actually on a 3GS...running 3.0.1 (sorry, I said 3.0 originally). Does that make any difference? I'm not really that bothered about a software unlock as I will get it done from o2 anyway...If I upgrade with pwnage, will that install the jailbreak there and then?
3GS is a whole different world. Apple is trying very hard to make it impossible for people to stay on older OS versions or downgrade OS versions.Quote:

Regarding jailbreak, you have 3 options:
1. Jailbreak 3.0.1 with redsn0w and stay at 3.0.1 until your iPhone crashes/requires restore.
2. Go to 3.1.2 with pwnagetool (directly if you own a mac, using redsn0w as an intermediate if you run windows)
3. Restore to 3.1.2 with apple ipsw and use blackra1n to jailbreak.
The last option upgrades your baseband. There are some reports of wifi problems with this newer baseband even for people who have never unofficially unlocked. There have also been reports of gps problems but I believe these are not related to baseband version.
Upgrading baseband is a one way process. You can never downgrade again. Usually for officially unlocked iPhones it is safe to upgrade baseband. I would recommend caution this time until the wifi issue is addressed by Apple.
I own a factory unlocked 3GS and am running 3.1 with the 3.0 baseband. I jailbroke with redsn0w and then used pwnagetool to upgrade. Have only ECID SHSH saved for 3.1 and 3.1.2 (you had to be very lucky to get 3.0.1 or 3.0 saved before Apple closed the door.)
Firstly, thanks very much for the very comprehensive and clear reply. I've just done two things:
1. Found my ECID
2. Obtained an ECID SHSH from Apple - as you say only 3.1.2 was the only option that would work. I've kept that stored on file somewhere safe in case I need it in the future.
Ideally, I wanted to upgrade to 3.1.2 without jailbreaking just yet. However, given what you have said about the WiFi issues, I think I'll hold back. Mind you, I've noticed WiFi issues on my phone using 3.0.1...
I don't think the baseband update will be a problem for me, provided that it doesn't affect my ability to Jailbreak in the future.
The frustrating thing about the wifi problems on 3.x is there does not seem to be one single cause.Quote:

When the 2G iPhones had a wifi problem, there was a clear cause and thus this could be fixed by the dev team.
As I said, I am using 3.0 baseband with 3.1 OS and running fine no wifi problems.
