Stuck in Recovery mode. Please help.

Hi everyone. I just got a free iPhone from a customer of mine last night. Admittedly, I'm an Android guy, but I'd like to see what an iPhone is like. I've never even held one before, so I don't know anything about them. When I turned the phone on and connected it to my computer, iTunes launched and said I had an iPhone in recovery mode. It said I needed to download new firmware for the iPhone. I downloaded what it needed and went to install the firmware. Problem is when I do it, it fails to an error message that says "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (40)." I have no idea what to do from here. I've tried a few suggestions I've found on the web but nothing has worked. Any help would be appreciated, especially detailed help lol. Thanks and have a great day. By the way, I know the phone is at least unlocked because the guy was using T-Mobile service on it. I don't know through which method it was unlocked. And I also don't know if it is jailbroken.

Publish your iPhone restore log http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm

The cause of error 40 is not always clear without examining the restore log. This is likely a hardware problem though.

Also I linked to a thread explaining that restore logs must be published via a paste site. Not split up over three posts here.

Your problem is that the NAND chip (storage for OS and your personal content) has failed. If you are very good with surface mount desoldering and soldering - this *can* be replaced
