should I use iTunes 10.x to redo my iPhone?

I need to wipe my iPhone, and reinstall the firmware. 2G first gen. ATT prepay. I noticed that iTunes is on version 10.x. Is it still possible to unlock and jailbreak the phone with the latest iTunes, or should I try to use an earlier version?

you have two options

1) create custom ipsw using pwnagetool 3.1.5 and restore
2) use 9.x iTunes -> update to 3.1.2/3.1.3 -> jailbreak using redsnow 0.9.3/4

after jailbreaking and unlocking you can use current version of iTunes (10.x)

** I never tested 2G with current 10x iTunes.

Pretty sure there is no problem restoring to 3.1.3 using iTunes 10.x on a 2G - there is no newer iOS version so - no risk. Then jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.2 (definitely NOT 0.9.3, while 0.9.4 will work you should use 0.9.2 is the stable release)

Ok, I did something, what I do not know. My phone is stuck on "Slide for emergency" with a connect to iTunes icon. Here is what I did:

I wanted to wipe the phone and reinstall everything on a 2G iPhone on AT&T prepaid account. I was using this just fine on my prepaid account until today.

I downloaded a 3.1.3 firmware and did a shift restore to this firmware. Afterwards, I tried to use redsn0w 9.2 (following the guide at iClarified) and it did not like the firmware I had downloaded. After some research, I found an older guide that I used and downloaded 3.1.2 firmware and retried to use redsn0w. redsn0w likes the new 3.1.2 firmware I downloaded, but the program keeps crashing. I am able to receive text messages coming from facebook, but I can not access the phone unless I want to place an emergency call.

Is there a way to start over and rewipe my phone, or am I stuck, or what can I do. Thanks in advance

Never mind, I figured it out.

There is a list of the problem I had:
1. The guide at iClarified, and a file was missing from the list, the 3.1.2 restore ipsw.
2. I started out with redsn0w 9.2, and it gave me an error. It didn't tell me what error, just that it wanted to send information to Microsoft about it. I then tried redsn0w 9.4 with the same problem as 9.2.

I located a 3.1.2 firmware from an older guide I followed, and tried it with redsn0w 9.2 and 9.4 and received same error. On a hunch, tried redsn0w 9.3 and had success.

The firmware on my phone now shows 3.1.3 firmware.

Should this make it easier to enable MMS on my phone?

I have reported the missing 3.1.2 IPSW to iClarified months ago. They have made no attempt to fix this. The screenshots are accurate, but the text is not. It's because they did a lazy find/replace when updating the guide from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3/3.1.2

The main difference between redsn0w 0.9.2 and 0.9.3 is that 0.9.3 contained a IPCC tethering hack for the 3G and 3GS.

So on the 2G in theory 0.9.3 should be no different to 0.9.2 - however 0.9.3 and 0.9.4 were betas and especially the tethering hack from 0.9.3 never made it into any subsequent releases of redsn0w.

The reason why I have always avoided recommending 0.9.3 or 0.9.4 (except in the specific instances where the beta features are useful)

Your crashing problems could be a few different things, did you obtain redsn0w 0.9.2 from redsn0w 0.9.2 [iPhone Dev Team] ? Other sources cannot be trusted. Also, there was something about processor affinity and .NET framework that caused some recent redsn0w crashes. You could try that.

I did a google search for redsn0w for 9.2 and 9.4, and in the end I followed a link to redsn0w 9.3 from here. I can not remember which post I followed to it. I saw the problems with iClarified that you had posted, but I had hoped that they fixed the problem...guess not. My phone is working, just have not started working on mms, tethering is something I am not that interested in trying yet.

My phone will not connect to youtube through the app, one of the reasons I was trying to wipe it clear and rebuild the phone. No clue as to why, unless it is something on youtube.com's side.

did you restore from iTunes backup after you re-jailbroke? that can break youtube?

Thanks for the info about youtube, I'll have to look into it later. I did restore my phone from iTunes 9.0.3.15. My computer died about 2 weeks ago and I needed to wipe the hdd and do a new install. I was waiting to do my phone until I had time.

Do not confuse restoring the OS via iTunes with restoring your personal settings from an iTunes backup (After the OS restore you get asked if you want to restore from iTunes backup or set the iPhone up as new)

When you restore from iTunes backup, you risk bring back problems that the OS restore actually fixed. This includes youtube problem.
