need to backup texts and contacts only

Hello all,

What I am trying to do is backup only my texts and contacts bcause that is all I need. When I updated to iOS4 my phone was laggy because I had too much application data on my phone. Others reported when they did a fresh install and not revert from a backup their iOS4 experience was faster.

I dont want to start over because I have over 200 contacts and many important text messages that are archived on my phone. Is there a way I can BACK these up and the contacts too and after the fresh install of iOS4 just bring them back in?

Yep, there are a few posts around here that detail it, but effectively, all you need to do is use iPhoneBrowser or iFunBox to connect to your iPhone and copy the databases off to your computer, then when you've got the phone set up, copy them back.

You can find them in:

/var/mobile/Library/<name>

Where <name> corresponds to the database you're looking for. i.e., "SMS" for SMS, "CallHistory" for your call log, etc. etc. Copy the .db file (SMS.db, CallHistory.db) to your computer. Reflash your phone and configure as a new phone, then copy the databases back over to the phone and reboot. You MUST reboot -- if you don't, things won't work properly.

(Secondarily, if you care, the .db files are SQLite databases, so you can get SQLite database editors to look at them and poke around. I don't recommend you make any changes)
