do you have any friends with an AT&T sim? cuz id activate the iphone with your friends AT&T sim and stay on 3.1.3, it runs the best on the 3G. I have a 3G on 4.2.1, and people are amazed at how quick it runs compared to their 3GS's, but you can feel it. what i mean is its faster than it should be, because I have all the nice stuff turned off.. spotlight off, I keep my email box EMPTY, my text messages SMALL, only 7GB of music on a 16GB iphone, etc. just know some stuff now is leaving 3.1.3 behind.. but on 3.1.3 you can tether for free, unlike 4.2.1. if you WANT to go 4.2.1......
DO NOT UPDATE IN ITUNES! you will lose your ability to unlock, and have to "upgrade" to the ipad baseband, which is hit or miss with people, meaning most of the time you lose GPS. On my 16GB white 3G, i retained GPS and it works flawlessly.. on my old black 8GB 3G, i lost GPS. use redsn0w to create a custom firmware. and that will hacktivate it for you. also remember to fix the pushfixes... or it will kill your battery like no other. (hence why you should activate with an AT&T SIM... none of that headache to deal with.) good luck!!
