memory almost full
Hi guys,
i have almost 4GB of space used as "other" on my iPhone 3G and I don't know how it got to that size or how to reduce it. I can't fit any music and hardly any pictures anymore. I tried restoring to a previous backup, but no luck! Please help!
Thanks

Is your phone jailbroken? is so, install mobile terminal. Then open mobile terminal and type the following commands
cd /
ls -Rl > ~/allfiles.txt
Then respond to this thread and attach the allfiles.txt file as an attachment. Then we can take a look and see what's consuming all your file space...

hi,
yes, the phone is jailbroken and unlocked.
i tried your suggestion but i get a repeated Permission denied message.
would it make any difference if i repeat the unlocking procedure, maybe with 3.1?

You should never restore from backup in itunes if you have a jailbroken phones. This causes the battery to drain faster and is likely the main reason you have 4GB of other files.
Apple does not test restore from iTunes backup for jailbroken phones.
The simplest solution is to do a restore of the iPhone and then do not select restore from backup. Instead setup your iPhone as new.
If you do this and want to keep previous SMS messages and call history make a copy of your previous iPhone backup BEFORE you restore and set up as new. This is located under:
%APPDATA%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\ on windows and under
$HOME/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ on OSX
If you have a backup, it is explained in other threads on this forum how to use tools to extract files from this saved backup and how to selectively load them back onto the phone.
You can also install via Cydia some programs that will backup apps you have installed on the phone including their settings the programs that can do this are AppBackup and pkgbackup or AptBackup. I have not used these apps so I can't comment on their effectiveness.

much appreciated!
