it happened to me.
what I did was I put the phone in DFU and restored it.
Then I jailbroke it (I'm 2G on an unofficial carrier, so basically I only have to activate). And then I synced my backup.
It's been a month a half now and the phone didn't die on me.

Do not restore from a backup!
99% of problems are caused by restoring a backup and are solved by not doing so.

iPhone 3G (3.0.1) - Mine is doing the exact same thing, Apple logo, spining wheel, and freeze. It starts over about every five minutes. I've run redsn0w again but it doesn't fix it. iTunes won't recognize it because it's stuck in boot up mode so I can't restore. The last thing I did was download a MMS (?) messaging program from Cydia, it rebooted and that was all she wrote. Can anyone help us?

This is a completely different problem.
Google mobilewatchdog.bundle for how to fix it.
