A) What version of iOS were you trying to jailbreak? It's worth mention that each tool is only for specific versions of iOS. There are several newer tools than Spirit for jailbreaking, so it could be that you were the wrong version of iOS to use the Spirit jailbreak, but I won't know until I get a little more information. It may not matter anyways, considering the phone is bootlooped now and you will likely have to restore in order to get it to work again.
B) Do you know what SHSH are? If so, what SHSH do you have on file? Without SHSH you can only restore to the absolute latest iOS -- which is either 5.0.1 or 5.0.2 at present. If you have previously jailbroken this phone, you may luck out and have an SHSH or two on file with Cydia. Use TinyUmbrella to find out. If this is the first time the phone has been jailbroken, then you will likely not have SHSH on file, but it's always worth checking.
C) The 3194 / Device is not eligible is a common error - Apple does not let you restore old versions of iOS. In order to do so, you would need to have saved SHSH files for your destination iOS revision. E.g., if you wanted to restore iOS 4.2.1, you'd need an SHSH for your specific phone for iOS 4.2.1. These can only be initially obtained while Apple is signing the revisions of iOS. This means that once Apple releases a new version of iOS, it is no longer possible to retrieve SHSH files for the older versions. In short, if you don't have them now, there's no way to get them.

I had a similar situation when I used redsn0w 0.9.4 to unlock and install Cydia on a 2G iPhone. When it rebooted, the slide to unlock would not work. I repeated the jailbreak a second time just to make sure that I did it right and got the same result. I realize that I don't know enough to take any more steps confidently so I need some advice. I don't know if this phone was previously SIM unlocked and I am currently struggling through understanding the baseband. What is the safest thing to do next?

What version of iOS was the 2G iPhone running that you were trying to jailbreak?
